Re: I wonder

Pony, some of the Old members just up and disappeared without explanation... like my 'ole buddy NY Minute. :'( No explanation or good-bye's, no contraversial threads just gone.

Carphunter got a guiding job... don't know the last time he checked in.

Barlow up in Wisconsin, got a bug in his rear and checked out for a while, was posting on another board but has vanished there too... no explanation.

I know of several others that are thin-skinned and stuborn, who have moved on. But that's only a handful. I think as people's lives change, so do their priorities and interests. To use your bar example... maybe they have found a new watering hole, maybe they just decided to quit drinking and stay home.

As JB also said in another thread, it's summer and things naturally slow down around here. Hey, even you don't post as much as you used too.

Re: I wonder

Well put Lady Fish.

PW2, I agree I probably have romanticised Docksite Chat a bit, there has always been some politics and some bashing......but the level to which it has gotten lately is frustrating. To expect it to be perfect and PC would be obsene and you're right it would be boring. I think what really made me vent was seeing what happened in the "Side of the Dock" thread. That thing turned real ugly towards the end.......something that has happened on a number of threads just in the last week.

I agree with you SS, there are many ways to get a message across without being offensive, hopefully we can all get that message and keep the banter a bit more civil.

Kagee, I hope that JB is right and it is just summer................I have been posting a lot in the help forums, just have stayed away from Dockside. And you are definately right about peoples lives changing, your bar example is a good one.

Re: I wonder

I haven't been around that long but I am one of the ones that keeps stirring the pot on a lot of these threads. I know in my heart as I'm sure PW, Treedancer, and the others that I disagree with know, we are not going to change each others minds but it is interesting to hear other points of view. I agree the name calling and personal insults do nothing to improve our lives but it is amazing to see several people ripping on each other here and then offering help and advise to each other in a different thread. I enjoy dockside discussions because at my job I have to be PC and neutral but here we can let loose with our opinions and get kind of grungy. As I've said in other posts even though we don't agree, from what I have seen I would think that PW and several others would be interesting to go get that previously mentioned beer with.

One banned member sine 2001??? The mods can verify this, as i am not certain of it -- yet, where else has this been accomplished online?

I've been here just a mere three years and mostly prefer just to keep my mouth shut while lurking and learning. However, I do think that this section of the forum is not quite like it has been in the past and as described in the forum description.

That description, of course, says "Here to talk not only about boating but just want to enjoy the huge community of members at iboats? This is the place for you! This area is highly moderated so please keep it clean, be respectful of others and just be nice."

No offense intended but maybe the mods need to get a little tougher in here. This is supposed to be the most highly moderated forum of them all. Maybe not just out and out banishment right off the bat but certainly some warnings or something to get someones attention. Maybe lock them out for a while.......dunno but sure some of you all would have some ideas.

I know there is no perfect solution and the mods have a tough job on here. I will also say while I'm at it that they do a great job (Hey! gotta kiss up while I can :|). Still, seems something needs to be done when people get downright mean, nasty, and disrespectful.

Thanks for allowing me my chance to vent.

Re: I wonder

Surely no one at the dock is so thin skinned that a few heated threads can scare them off.
One minute you can be sparring with txs and PW and then the next you can join forces with them and capture your common foe in a vice!
This isn't real life folks. There's no need to get worked up about it.

Re: I wonder

Maybe something else is happening.Things are just getting a bit stale. One can pretty much expect a certain standard reaction from specific people who seem frozen in their opinions and will keep on repeating the same old ideas that we know already.Normally relationships grow and people evolve and learn by listening to each other, while on this forum there does not seem to be a development in any direction.Nobody so far has managed to change attitudes or world view.
Maybe there are interpersonal relationships that have developed ,but these happened on a far more private basis. What I perceive is that lately there are more and more post about things that were found elsewhere on the net and fewer "real things" that happen to our members. In short is has become far less personable.
Oh forget it,I am just rambling.

Good point...........

I have a theory. Every single negative thing that happens in our lives gets posted in Dockside Chat. With the Good News Network, maybe only 20% of the good stuff that happens gets posted here, the rest is posted in Good News. At only 300 threads in the while it has been a forum, and the fact that some of the good things that happen to us are posted here anyways.............Why not disband that forum and ring those types of threads here?? I mean the suggest a boat forum forum has nearly as many topics.....

The same could be said about SHT's, 10% the # of topics as here.........

Rolmops, I think the real answer is that if one has been locked into an idealogy that has so clearly and fundamentally failed in practice and application, I'd want to change the subject too!

Re: I wonder

Nothing has changed, only your expectations have changed.

Like the "good ole days" when it would take momma all day to wash the clothes. I dont think those were the good ole days according to her.

LMAO, the politics forum has been suggested and failed a few times..............probably rightfully so.

Ken- I respect your opinion, but have a hard time believing things haven't changed. its a different atmosphere in this place now IMHO

Since you keep pointing this out- what are you doing to change it?

You've created a post to complain about how negative the Dock has become. Have you contributed anything positive?

Out of your last 8 posts to the Dock, 7 have been in this thread!

Many of us have been purposely starting light hearted posts and you don't seem to be contributing to any of those.

Instead of just identifying the problem, help work toward the solution. Remember- you're either part of the problem or part of the solution.

Re: I wonder

Rubberfrog you are right.......

I will make an effort to do so. I guess I didnt think of this thread as complaing so much as a civil discussion about this place. I am not doing all I can to help the situation.

I all honestly havent even had a chance to read a lot of them, let alone post some of my own. I post up in the Evinrude forum then go back to working here at the house, and so on..............I sometimes forget to scroll down to check this out. My bad
