Re: IBM help

Do I need a certain type tower to put my harddrive in?
Any certain speed processor, type?
It's Windows ME on the drive.

Re: IBM help

Everything that i386 told you were things to check before trashing the computer you have. They don't take that long to do. Those are alot of the tests a good computer shop would do before condeming yours. I worked in one for a few years before I moved on to a big company. Did you open it up and make sure everything was clean, or are you ready to just move on to another one?

Your hard drive will fit in almost any case you buy. Are you going to buy a new motherboard and processor or find a used one somewhere? Either way, you will probably need to run a repair install on ME after you get all the new stuff installed.

Re: IBM help

The fellow came by last night and did some tests, don't ask me, and said yes, the processor was gone south and maybe the motherboard along with it.

I just want to get another tower to put my drive in.
I have found some that come with different speed processors etc and was just wanting to know if there is anything special that I would need to look for.

OK, chances are very good that your HD will fit in pretty much anything you buy. Are you looking at new computers that are ready to go, have the operating system loaded and ready to fire up? As far as buying anything special, it just depends how much you want to spend and what that computers job is.

If you are not buying a "ready to go" computer, then you need to make sure you have your ME disk and the original OEM number.

Re: IBM help

Looking at ready to go tower with win2000 loaded up already.
This puter does nothing special, just used as back-up(funny) to my new one.
Just some data I need off my hard drive plus I want the 3rd puter anyway.
What would you think minimum processor speed would be ok just for use as back up?

You can always re-pin your old hard drive and add it to your new system as a slave drive. Copy off any and all data files (not programs) from the old drive to the new drive for safe keeping. You'll have to re-install any programs to the new hard drive then import your old data files. It's not hard to do and sounds like a big deal, but it's really not.
I would lay down until the feeling goes away it you're thinking about doing an 'OS upgrade install' to your old hard drive. Doing an upgrade is never as good as doing a clean wipe and install of the OS.

A few thing's SBN are you moderatley mechanically inclined? and how big is your hard drive and what type?

Hmmm any ME expert's out there? Question can one start up ME in safe mode secondly if you can will the floppy be functional and third if it is starting up in safe mode........ will that by pass the drivers already loaded in his OS Now if all that come's to pass i can email you a driver blocker and you can boot up that old hard drive into a new system if not ............. It's all kaput that is you will get the BSOD every time you try to load that old hard drive on to a new mother board. Sorry but that is the way it is............. Unless you can find the same chipset that the old one has and that is very unlikey.

Re: IBM help

Got the tower in and other hard drive installed as a slave.
Now what do I do if anything to get my favorites off of IE on the slave? Don't know if I can, just thought I would ask.
Also what windows folders can I delete off the slave drive to free up more room?

Thanks.

Re: IBM help

Try this...
http://qbx6.ltu.edu/s_schneider/howto/ie_favorites.shtml

Goto slave drive and search the drive for your data files, pics, docs, mp3's etc. Copy these files up to your main drive (C). Don't copy the contents of the old Program Files folder, these are installed versions of your programs from the old system. These programs won't run on the 'new' drive , even if you copy them into the new Program Files folder on C:. Your new OS won't have the registry entries that would be needed to run them. You'd have to do a fresh install of the program on your new hard drive.
