I just had a question . I went looking in the megamall to check prices on a few items I need. Anyway when I calculated shipping it was over 50% of total order,is this normal or did I do something wrong???
Thanks,
KYHunter

I suppose it depends on how much the item you were looking at cost. Sometimes small items are not worth buying off the internet. Unfortunately, since UPS went public a couple of years ago their rates have shot thru the roof. I'm also sure that they have added hefty fuel surcharges on by now as well. Plus if you live in the sticks they have a rural surcharge which is pretty steep.

If in doubt, call iboats and have them explain. .

Also, if buying any chemicals or flamables, there will be a "hazardous" surcharge, of about $17.
Then there are the over sized or over weight surcharges.

I recntly was very very surprised by the shipping costs of an online purchase. One 10x17' tent, and a small can of seam sealer. Total shipping cost of $6.95.
It was shipped in 2 separate boxes, UPS ground, took a week.

Most other etailers were charging $25-40 just for shipping one tent. Campmor will get more of our business.

I have found that if you look in the iboats shipping calculator or whatever that is called - within your cart, you can tell which items have the high shipping on them. When I find things that the shipping is too high on I look for an alternative. Like roscoe says, it could have been from a manatory hazmat fee which.

Thanks guys,
I was going to order a fuel pump rebuild kit, a through hull vent and a water seperator filter. The order total was around $50.00 and the shipping was $27.00 . It had to ship from 2 different warehouses maybe thats why?
Thanks again,
KYHunter

I'd still check with iboats. That cannot be right.

You're right about shipping from two different warehouses. When you buy from iBoats you're charged shipping from each warehouse as if it were a seperate order. Sometimes I've deleted a small item(s) that shipped from a different warehouse because the added shipping for that item(s) made it's purchase price too high to justify.

Like Roscoe said, "hazardous materials" surcharges also make some items too expensive to buy from iBoats.

KYH, if they stick by the freight calculation ask them how the heck they expect to sell anything. These companies do get discounts from all the carriers like UPS.

Took me awhile but i have also figured this out. Figured it cost the same or less if i go to the local hardware stores that has a good selection of marine items. I would have to question some of the shipping/handling charges on items. Seems like they jump on FED/EX shipping when a stamp and envelope would do. I am doing a lot more bying locally. fred

I usually only go local for mainstream items like oil. Other than that you can find most things for much cheaper online. Iboats has some things for half the price is would cost locally and I won't pass that up. Plus, with most online orders you don't have to pay sales tax.
