Went duck hunting a few years back on Lake Russell, SC. Had everything you need to sucessfully get the ducks; decoys, dog ( a good one), calls which I had mastered, waders (very important) good gun and steel shot ammo. Oh yes, a 14 ft wide bottom jon boat with a 20 hp merc. Left landing about 5 am used Qbeam to see the way. Noticed a little ice had formed a ring around certain parts of the lake. Didn't pay it any attention. (big mistake!) Had been traveling about 15 minutes at top speed (about 20 mph) Had friend who didn't really know what he was looking for holding spot light (big mistake) I had told him to look for stumps, land, or booyes. (big mistake) We had just turned the corner to go into the pot hole ( a small body of water connected to the lake by a small canal; this one was about 200yards across (perfect place to hunt, which I had used for years) We had gotten all the way to the end of the canal and I was thinking this is going to be a great day when all of a sudden WHAM! Then there was this sound; it sounded like we were sliding on asphalt we were still moving even though the engine was a lot louder and out of the water. That's when my buddy who was scared ****less put the light out the side of the boat. ICE! and a whole ****load of it well after about 75 yard of sliding everything stopped. No use using the engine: cut it off. I asked him if he saw the ice he said yes. I asked him why he didin't tell me; he said that was not one of the thing I had asked him to look for. So now we are sitting there trying to figure out how to get off the Ice. It was to thin to hold our weight standing on it (remember we are in a wide bottom jon boat). So my smart idea was to throw the anchor as far as we could hoping it would go through the ice and we could pull ourselves out of the ice (another big mistake) Threw the anchor(mushroom type) about 30 ft out. Yep, good news it went right through the ice, bad news, there was a crack comming from the hole to our boat and it was folowing the gouge left by the foot of the motor. Have you ever seen the cartoon where the ice breaks up around someone and the fall in? That was us except worse. The back of the boat started to go through the ice. Well that wasn't any good because I was back there and water started comming in so I leaped to the front and when I did so the front finally broke through. So, there we are 75 yard away from the edge of the ice sitting in water stuck with Ice all around us. It took us most of the day to break the ice so we could get out. Oh and buy the way the only thing we had besides the anchor which sucked was our guns which we used ( the but end)to break up the ice. So two busted up stocks and 6 hrs later we made it out and home and into bed (which was a good idea!)

Trollhole,

Been there. It is frightening to be surrounded by ice (that's getting thicker by the minute) and you can't get out. It's a REAL problem.

Glad you made it out.

Re: Ice Hunting

That is hilarious.
I think that if you had enough rounds, you could have shot your way out, or at least it would have helped. I know that is what I would have done.
I can't believe your friend would not tell you about the ice!
I have friends like that. If you don't explain EVERYTHING to them, they just say, "you never told me that". IDIOTS, THEY ARE ALL IDIOTS. Sometimes I feel like I have my kid with me, not adults.
But without them I guess life would not be as interesting.
Cheers to a good story.
Bro Chris...

Re: Ice Hunting

Been there, changed the undershorts.

Tried late season hunting the Minnesota river in my 14' Aluminum Crestliner "V" bottom (lakes and ponds mostly frozen over). On the way down stream everything was going great until I encountered a Ice Jam. Figured I'd just power right through it with the Merc Super10. Made it about 2 boat lengths in. Ice was giving way as planned, until... some of the larger ice chunks sucked up into the prop. Ever heard that noise of a shear pin breaking and at the same moment thinking Oh #%@#, I'm &%$%^#. So there I am stuck in the middle of the river with ice piling in behind me blocking my escape. I had enough forsight to bring extra pins and tools but I did not expect to be changing it hanging over the transom looking at ice piling up behind me. So I got the pin replaced (no tools lost to the river). Did I mention the motor had one gear (forward). As usual I had the oars and bog pole in the boat with me (ever tried to row backwards against the river current). I pushed with the bog pole to clear the ice jam then row, row, row, against the current and was finally able to make it to shore. Took a moment and gathered my thoughts, cleaned my shorts, attached rope to boat and while standing on shore pulled the boat across the ice jam. Encountered 2 more that day but I learned my lesson the first time. To this day I still bring my oars and 2 bog poles (10' & 14') with me on every trip no matter what lake, pond, or river.

Re: Ice Hunting

Did the same thing with my boat here on Lake Erie....I could see some patchy ice in the moonlight,no big deal the ice had just formed over night so it wasnt very think.....I rounded the corner into a honey hole, and I again saw the ice with the moonlight, but didnt think twice about it.....As I hit the ice,WOT mind you, the boat slowed way down and I could here the stress cracks 20 yrds away...I got about 45' in and decided to turn around, by the time I got back in my path I had just busted up I had lost alomost all momentum....Cleaned the shorts after that one....

Ya have to be careful with that ice, I have a nice dent on my side of the bow that hit first.....I Imagine a little thinker ice with the same speed would have punctured my boat.

Re: Ice Hunting

May have ice 4-5 months out of the year, but never have to worry about the beer getting warm.

If you have to worry about your beer getting warm you're drinking too slow! :D
