I have a galaxy boat with Mercruiser outdrive Ser#A480031. The engine has a tag on top of the valve cover that says "Marine Power" P181S.

The engine is an inline 4 cylinder. What type of ignition system is this. The problem is that it has developed a skip.

Re: ID engine

That drive SN is a 1986 Alpha drive, that came off a 260 V8 and has a 1:50. Which makes the gear ration completely wrong.
The engine is also not a Mercruiser engine, it's a Marine Power engine.
Sounds like someone has been doing a lot of parts changing, so who knows what distributor you have.
You might post a picture of the distributor, that would help.

Re: ID engine

The "skip" as it turns out is actually a loss of compression in #2 cylinder. This comes after a little further interrogation of the owner! He heard a loud pop and had to idle home.
