Financing or buying a boat that will depreciate heavily in its first 100 hours su**s. It is everyones dream but it is soooo hard to throw away so much value just cuz you want that new boat smell.

Make sure that "buddy" buys a good USED boat that is right for him and his son.

Use a chunk of the 50k to set up RESP for junior, and the govt will kick in too.

Pay down mortgage with anniversiary payments to avoid penalties.

Keep a handfull of cash available for emergencies, like more boating stuff! :) :)

Invest the money,, in a boat. If you dont you'll be miserable wishing you had. Sounds to me like the future is pretty secure financially, go out and have fun with the kid on the boat, life's to short not to.

Been there on the mortgage. One of the best feeling I ever had was to pay off the house. I would make sure I have 3-6mos expenses in teh bank, buy a nice boat, pay the house down with what's left, the upgrade boats when the house is paid off.

Spinner,

We have a similar philosophy, but I also stress about money a lot. With that said, things have always worked out. Soooo, the problem is me stressing, not the living for the present part.

Mags, I am with Spinner and Reel Poor. Get the boat you want. Teach your kid to enjoy life AND be responsible. You are being both.

Magster,
Go with your gut feeling. You know you want a boat and you know you want to make sure your boy is okay too.

I don't really have any input here because I am not very good with money. I make alot, but I spend even more. I still have to come to terms with that before I offer advice or my opinion.

Good luck with whatever you do, but we do want to pics of whatever boat you do buy. ;) :D

My 'gut' says get one of these but my brain isn't quite on board yet.
Oh geez, I love that pun :)
There isn't any of these for sale in the northwest currently but I think this would be ideal. Actually, there seems to be a much better selection of boats in the southeast... of course! :)
Nice boat Magster, very nice. I can see why there would be temptation to spend the money. How well do they hold their value in the US?

I have a feeling you'll make the right decision no matter which way you go: good luck

I live in Canada... I ain't one of them crazy yanks 'eh! ;)
I'm sure this boat, like every other, will depreciate steadily until it's worth nothing... it may even dip into negative numbers eventually!

I think the price and availability of gasoline will dictate the value of every single one of our boats (and vehicles) in the coming decades.

This is like a cross-roads almost. Smart says pay down mortgage but I don't want to do that because I ain't all that smart 'eh!

DOH! Apologies Magster: put it down to the painkillers

And I'm with ya on the not being smart when it comes to money: I'm just finishing a resto project on a veedub golf gti that has cost near enough £2000 and the finished vehicle would really struggle to acheive half of that on the open market (might actually break even if sold in the collectors market if I waited long enough!).

Yeah, I think the price of gas is going to hit values on a lot of things in the coming few years: maybe best live for today :D ;)

Nice boat mags. There are a bunch of those in the Midwest too. Still a long way from you. Not many in the west at all as you mentioned. Here's a SeaRay in Seattle that seems to fit.

http://

adcache.boattraderonline.com/6/3/9/80635339.htm

I am being careful not to link, stick those together . . .

Here's one in your neighborhood. You will have to add the http:// to the address

yachtworld.com/core/listing/pl_boat_full_detail.jsp?slim=quick&boat_id=1480342&ybw=&units=Feet&currency=USD&access=Public&listing_id=56449&url=

Always has been, we just break the rules a lot. JB's been crackin down (don't ask how I know). The rule is no link to any commerical site (not just competitive). Cut and paste the URL is OK as long as there is no direct link. It screws up their link to statistics and probably helps the stats of the other sites.

Edit: RP's link (C & P) is closer and a lot more reasonable $. Love the claim for 40 knots. How do ALL of the brokers get away with that carp?

A 3 year old eh... well.. let me tell you - some of my fondest memories of my childhood involve going out in the boat with my dad...
Would my dad be any shallower in the ground if he had not bought that boat?

Re: I'd like some input here...

Ya' learn somethin' new every day. I removed the link I had with the picture.
Funny you mention the speed... I had a similar boat, smaller (22 Sea Ray), and 2000 pounds lighter. It topped out at 33 mph with a 305 gm merc/alpha. 40 is simply not attainable with that power in those boats. As a matter of fact, I wouldn't buy one of those unless it had at least a 350/5.7 in it. I think you'd need 300 hp to get 40 mph. Those are bigger than they look in the pictures.
Why do they under-power those 'sporty' boats?

Re: I'd like some input here...

Yeah, 40 MPH is tough, let alone 40 Knots . . . I have a friend with a 23 ft. Maxum bowrider 5.7 carbed 250 bhp at the prop. Barely did 42 MPH new . . .

Weren't you looking at something else once with a 5.0 though? You didn't seem concerned  Remember the newest 5.0 MPI's are stronger than carbed 5.7s

If I wasn't it was temporary insanity... I am now :)
The 305 in my Sea Ray was a 2v model rated at 198 hp (898 model). I see the new 305 mpi's are rated at 260hp now and the carbed 350 is 250hp. I wonder if the 350's torque is a bit stronger though? I guess the bottom line is that if I have to have one of these 'little' boats again it has to get up and go... definately like to see 40+.

Maybe he should payoff his mortgage - get a loan against the equity and buy the boat - this way he only has one payment to worry about and not a boat and a mortgage payment.

Consider the boat 'bait'.

Remember only "real women" love boats. Once you land the catch of your dreams, she will help you pay off the boat and the mortgage. ;)
