So, my family and my buddy and his wife are camping together this weekend... We fished last night, wasn't horrendous, went this a.m., and about the same. Had a blast, even if we didn't catch much.
Came back to the camper this a.m. - and another friend's sister texted and said they had a friend (I know -- right?) that was stranded on the lake and needed help. We weren't doing anything pressing, so, we decided to go put my buddies boat in the water to run across the lake and help them out.
My buddy's boat rope... can't be more than 10' long. The ramp is SWAMPED with people... so he backed down to the water, I unhooked the boat, and pushed it off... and tried to jump out of the way so the next guy could back into the drink... as I stepped up to the dock... the short rope caught me... and I landed on the dock like a beached whale... I jumped up to do a little damage control and see how many saw it happen... and judging by the sneers and laughter... most of them saw it, and many more heard it (aluminum dock... fat dude falling on it... make big noise.) As a only a man would... "I'm okay!"... after everyone's wondering if the moron that made a dent in an aluminum dock is alright.
I'd like to say the only thing I hurt was my pride... but I'd be lying... big 'ol black and blue knot on my left leg kinda tells the story.
Moral of the story is, while it's nice to hurry your stride to get out of the way and make life easier for someone else... it's not imperative that it all happens in 30 seconds.
We made it across the lake, tied off (sort of... I hung on to the rope through a cleat... in case something happened that we needed to break away quickly.) to the stranded boater, and made it back. I never fail to have a story when I go out it seems.
