We inherited a Johnson 5.5 hp Sea-Horse motor, but do not know the age. It is a model CD-15, serial number 1696637. It is complete with owner's manual, gas tank, etc, and is believed to be in running order. Does anyone have any suggestions about how we get more information about this motor? How do we establish a value for it? Any ideas for finding a potential buyer?

Thanks for the help!

Found the year, I think, thanks to the links in the FAQ. Am I right that it is a 1958 motor? Could still use help with the other questions. Thanks

Correct it is a 1958, a popular year among collectors. That doesn't mean it is worth tons of money though.

You should go to the Antique Outboard Motors Club website.

There is a wealth of knowledge of those motors over there on their Ask-A-Member forum. You can also offer to sell it on their Webvertize pages.

Re: ID/value for Johnson 5.5 HP motor

If memory serves me correctly, 1958 is the last year for steel engine covers rather than fiberglass. I just bought a nice 1964 5.5 horse for $75. I'm not trying to be flip with you but they are worth whatever you can get for them. This series of engine is too old to have a book value and there is a limited market for them. Condition is, of course, the main determining factor.

If it is in good running condition you'd get $200-$300 for it with a tank in my area...
