Carbs won't work pointing that way. They need to be pretty well horizontal.

Why not just get a VW engine?

My friends home-made helicopter uses this.
the trans is turned sideways, and the axle gets attached to the prop (over head prop)

VW engine I imagine would be cheaper all around (modify, maintain, and repair)
Or, just get an 18hp out of a riding mover.

Don't really have any technical info here, just I want to see pictures of this project as you go along. Sounds pretty interesting. I think the Ob powerhead would create a TON of challenges, but man would it awesome if you could get it to work. Although the VW engine is pretty much ready to go, even aircooled. The wind drawn in from the prop would provide more then enough cooling for the motor. Either way, can't wait to see pics when you get this project up and running.

BTW....Used to be a auto tech. You know if you take the VW pitons out, and turn them facing the rear you get ALOT more HP right? Won't last as long, but I've seen a bug lift the front tires by doing that.

I don't think you'll have enough power to "haul" on the water with that motor. Don't know if you've ever been in a real airboat, but they have big honkin' engines on them. Last one I was in, only 19-foot long, had a Chevy 350 SB geared to a prop. Most have small plane motors in them. 85hp might be enough to plane off if you propped it right, but probably not much more than that...

Just mount the motor upside down. You would have the prop reduction (airplane props work best under 2500 rpm), your powerhead would be closer to the water supply, just turn the carb over.
I've been around planes all my life and I don't think I've ever seen an OB motor and wings in the same package, and the experimental are a pretty resourceful bunch.

I think that unless you mount it vertically you will run into cooling problems as the water for cooling takes a definite path, dependant on gravity. Changing the aspect of the motor changes the pathway of the water, which could result in hot spots where the water simply won't reach....

I always look at the motivation behind the project, do you want an airboat, or do want an odd one of a kind boat, that risks not working out.

If you want an airboat, go to one of their forums and take their advice, which I'm sure won't be this path.

If you want the unique project...well....then go for it.
