Re: Ideal Boat for Restoration?

Depends on the state. In PA it's not bad at all. The Fish & Boat people just looked up the existing registration numbers and sent a letter to the previous owner to make sure it wasn't stolen. I was issued a temp sticker while this went on. They couldn't have been more helpful. Unfortunately I have heard horror stories about other states.

Thanks 109, I am sure that with old project boats or free boats the chance of there being a title is much smaller. Not worth putting all that work into in without the title.

Re: Ideal Boat for Restoration?

There are plenty of 1980's 16' Bayliner bowriders that can be had cheap with rotten decks/stringers. Personally I prefer I/O's...if you have to redo stringers and engine mounts it's more difficult to remove the engine versus an outboard but consider that a two stroke outboard will be using about twice the fuel. This may not be a factor to you but was to me since I intended to use my boat for trips on the Great Lakes (which it does well).

If you're willing to do your own mechanical work, an OMC I/O is okay. It seems that their outboards (Johnson/Evirude are fine).

A '60s-'70s closed bow V bottom can be had really cheap too, probably for free

Re: Ideal Boat for Restoration?

Here in Virginia I had to call up the department of game & inland fisheries, I gave them the number off the hull & they looked it up and gave me the name and address of the last person it was reg. to. After that I had to complete a affidavidt form from there web site and send it certified return recipt, informing the P O that I had the boat and ask if he still wanted it (kinda scary after paying for it), if not, to then provide the title. If he did not have the title the return recipt with his signiture would act as his release of the boat to me. I recieved a signed return recipt about a week later and submited it with the form to obtain the title.

In Michigan it's not a big deal. No title? Just bring in a bill of sale along with the HIN. They take about 20 minutes and do a background check of sorts on the HIN. If it's good, a new title is issued. Same for the trailer

I will probably go with an outboard. The boat will be used on smaller lakes and not the ocean or long trips. I also don't have any mechanical experience, not that I am intimidated to learn, but maybe for my first boat it is wise to stay with an outboard.

I think that's a good choice. I'm sorta mechanical but easily intimidated by complexity. We paid a mechanic to do a lot of work to our old '73 outboard 5 years ago to get it running (it had been laid up for many years). Since then we haven't had to do anything to it and it's been reliable. I did replace my impeller once though.

I enjoy working on the 1969 Starcraft Holiday. Looking forward to catch lots of walleye and perch when it is finished.

Need to see pics, but for the 2001 Johnson/Evinrude Oceanpro engine it books for $3200+ low value price NADA, plus the trailers about $800+. Seems to be a great deal on those items and you can pretty much say the boat itself was free.

That is what I figured when I looked at the Boat. The motor alone was worth it.:D

Re: Ideal Boat for Restoration?

Just some quick info I pulled up. I was told by the Previous Owners aka PO's that I had to submit some info with the local PD also and bring it somewhere to be inspected before obtaining the registration. Lots of boats on craigslist waiting to be had. Enjoy!
Boat Registration
Where can I register my boat?
There are various locations throughout the State, including some marinas and sport shops, town halls and DVM substations. We recommend calling these businesses to check with them before attempting to register your boat. You can also register your boat Monday through Friday at the Boat Desk in Concord, or at Marine Patrol Headquarters in Gilford.

Who can register a boat?
Only the person listed on the previous year?s registration or the owner of the boat may register it by providing proof of ownership.

What do I need to bring to register my boat?
You will need to bring proof of ownership, such as a bill of sale, a previous registration (if applicable), and your driver license.

I lost my registration or decal. What do I do?
A replacement registration or registration decal can be issued at the Boat Desk in Concord, some DMV substations, or Marine Patrol Headquarters. The owner will need to have the bow number of the boat and his/her driver license. The fee for a replacement registration is $10.00; the fee for replacement decals is $3.00.

All I had to do is show my Bill of sale and my Drivers License to get my boat transferred, and the dmv told me it does not even need to be notarized for a boat transfer in KY.

Re: Ideal Boat for Restoration?

Ok my 2 cents.... aguy at work wanted this old bayliner out of his life and i wanted it in mine hehehe so 300 bucks later "I GOT ME A BOAT!" (youll hear that alot on here) anyway i brought it home and knew it had to be totally redone.. I found this website by pure accident but man has it saved my bacon more times than i can count and now im almost done restoring her and only have 1300 from bow to stern!!!! so a new boat for 1300 alittle sweat, a lot of bad words, alot of fiberglass granding, even more itching. But its mine dang it and i love it

Re: Ideal Boat for Restoration?

I would look for one like I saw on my local craigslest yesterday, It was an early 60s 14 foot DEEP V aluminum runabout on a good trailer for only 400 bucks It had already been painted and just needed some seats an an engine. Screw trying to rebuild a bunch of rotton wood and getting the epoxy chemicals all over the place,,,,,,,

Re: Ideal Boat for Restoration?

Banks,

I agree with something from the 70's. those boats are made really well.

Here is a Idea for you. I run free boat removal add's on craigslist, and I get 4-5 emails a week on people just wanting these old boats out of there yard. often times comes with trailer and titles for both. this way you can just keep running add's until you find something you like. I have picked up a number of boats like this and have not paid a dime for any of them.

It is just a thought. these free boats, all of them need work, but it seems to be worth it so far.

Whatever you get you will enjoy for a long time after putting all the work into it!

Welcome to Iboats...People here will guide you every step of the way.
