Identification of Elgin outboard needed

Today I bought an old Elgin outboard, but there is no ID tag on it. I was hoping someone would recognise it and be able to tell me what I have. It is 2 Cylinder, liquid cooled, and has a forward/neutral clutch. It has a built in tank, plus a fitting on the front for an external tank. It has the number 23010 on the side of the engine. It used to be the pale blue/green, but someone has painted it. I realize it's a West Bend made motor for Sears, but was hoping for an exact year/model/HP rating.
Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Identification of Elgin outboard needed

I found my answer, thanks to some kind folks at the Antique Outboard Motor site who recognized it.
It is either a 1957 or 1958 7.5 HP.
Model number would be 571-58781 or 571-58782
Just in case anyone wanted to know...

That looks like a cool old motor. Glad you found the information you were looking for. How about some pics of it in use?

Thanks,
I have a bit of work to do on it first. It had gas in the tank and had been stored for several years. I've gotten most of the tarnish out of the tank, but now have to get new fuel lines and clean the carb.
The coils look like they have already been changed, but I want to get the fuel lines on it and reassemble it before testing spark. I also hope it will still pump water. The guy I bought it from said everything was good when he stored it, but that has was years ago.
If I do get it out on the water before the snow flies, I'll be sure to take a couple snapshots.

Re: Identification of Elgin outboard needed

Hello I am a collector and mechanic of outboards. I have a few of those late 50S Elgins and worked on them thru the years many times. They were great little motors for there day.Biggest problem is the rare hard to find waterpump impellars on those 7.5 H.P.If yours is still good your lucky. Most times they are dry rotted and the blades are broken off in the pump housing, sometimes clogged up in the powerhead too. (But thats another story,LOL.)If your original impellar is shot you can take two small Mercury impellars from West Marine or a Mercury dealer piggy back them on top of each other after reaming them to accept the splined bronze oillite old broached hub from the original impellar. You can cut the remaining blades if any off the old impellar and carefully cut out the original spline. Its metal so its not easily damaged. It works well though the Trick is reaming not drilling to the right size as you want a tight fit on the Mercury impellars so they dont slip. Press the two impellars on the old spline in a vise carefully after reaming lining up the blades perfectly. It wasnt much to ream I dont remember the size its been about fifteen years since I did it.You could pin the impellars but thats more involved,Just a trick I learned. Also Evinrude under the flywheel high tension ignition coils without the laminated mounting part removed can be fit to the Elgin coils using their laminated metal mounting piece.Well hope I have been helpful and Good Luck with the ole Elgin.....Glenn in New York

Welcome,
You should do your own post.It gets very confusing when Qs and As begin to accumulate.58201 is a 52, 2 hp built by West Bend.
