Identification of Johnson Outboard.....

All,
I have a 1950's era Johnson (I say this based on visual comparison to my other outboards)

The Serial on the Welch plug says;

142 8057

State has it titled as a 1956 35HP Johnson RDE-186.

Everything I have looked at says there was no 35HP that year.

Can someone confirm for me the year,Horsepower, etc.

Thanks,
Chris

All,
She looks like the pic but can you tell this from the serial number and if so how? (website, literature, etc)

Evinrudes have lookup charts that I have used to confirm outboard years etc.....Is this available for Johnsons?

Originally the state was able to "correctly" title supposedly based on serial number...

Just curious,
chris

Re: Identification of Johnson Outboard.....

Johnson goes by the model number. RDE-18 is a 1956 30hp. Should have some metal discs on the rear half of the cowling with a raised '30', one on either side. Would not be the first time the 'state' had inaccurate info on model/year of outboards...

The serial number of 1, 428, 057 also makes it a 1956.

Johnson serial numbers from 1,328,373 to 1,493,185 were produced in 1956

Title is in error. Correct model number is RDE-18, not RDE-186. All above info is correct. :)
