When identifing a 1961 10 hp johnson, you look at the tag riveted to the transom clamp on the left or port side of the motor. In the case of the engine I have, the model number is qd 22. The serial number also starts with 22. On the power head, the serial number is also stamped into the freeze out plug. Would it be correct to say that those 2 numbers would identify the year of the power head?

The model number alone would do that. The serial number would be just telling what number your motor is, under that model. In example, if your serial number is 22567, that would be 22,567th motor with that model number. If one could find out how many motors in each model number there are, it could help give you an idea of what month it was built. The old Zephyr I have on my avitar here, had a 00066 serial number. The 66th Zephyr built under the 4404 model number. I'm still kinda kickin myself for selling that motor.

If the serial numbers on the welch plug and the plate on the transom bracket match, then the powerhead is original to the motor and would be from 1961.
