I caught this fish twice in about five minutes in the Pensacola pass on Saturday. Hook marks, definitely the same one!

I haven't come across this one before. Anyone know what he is? He was released (obviously).

Looks like a Blue-Striped grunt to me. Did it make a grunting noise when you pulled it out of the water?

I agree.....the panfish of the sea, and good eating....of course you need alot of them. My lady caught over 20 of them yesterday and we used them in the crab traps. She likes crab more than fish.

I thought I was the only one who didn't know what the heck I'm pulling out of the water.

I just started fishing in the ocean and unless its a hammerhead shark, I have no clue as to what I'm catching...

Close, but no cigar. It is actually a sand perch (Diplectrum formosum), another member of the Sea Bass family.

Ha when I don't know what something is I usually just refer to it as 'that sea bass I caught' and for once that was actually kind of close! Got to say it didn't look at all like those grunts. Thanks for the sea bass info. I just bought 'Sport Fish of the Gulf of Mexico' and have to highly recommend this book. Flipped to that fish in a matter of moments, but no sea bass info! :D

I vote for grunt. They will steal your bait all day long. Esp. if you use frozen shrimp. I recommend pealing the shrimp if you are losing bait quickly.

You got that right...glengold!.. We peel the shrimp.....cut small pieces....#6 gold hook...bity piece of shrimp....catch grunts and pinfish. Move to the other side of river...2/0 hook with the grunt or pinfish as bait...bigger fish!

My lady likes catching the bait more than the target fish.

Her ealier today...with a pinfish bait...she caught over 20 of them...

Me?....Big zero..no big'uns today....
