Compression is checked with both plugs out. screw a compression gauge into the plug hole and crank the engine at least 4 turns or until the gauge stops rising. Really low, like 20 pounds is no good. Anything over 100 is good. Both cylinders should be within 10 pounds of each other.

I finally was able to scrounge up a compression gauge and checked both cylinders yesterday. A few things though. First thing is the guy I borrowed it from said to leave the one spark plug in when I test the other. Also I could not get the starter to work. I had a fully charged battery and the best I got was a click and the carb closed. So I had to do the pull cord method. At first I could only get around 90 pounds but I reset and pulled harder and got a better number. It was actually kind of hard to pull. (I hope that?s a good thing) Anyway I was able to get 110 pounds on the top cylinder and 120 pounds on the bottom cylinder. I bet I would get better numbers if I could get the starter to work. The ignition and battery wires for the motor are old, cracked and some wire is exposed. My guess is I?m shorting somewhere. It doesn?t look hard to run new wire. Just tedious. Plus I don't know what size I would need.

So whats next!!!

NO, you don't leave in any plugs because the engine cranks over slower and you get a lower compression number. The idea in checking compression is to do it at as close to running speed as possible. Think about it: If you turn over the engine flywheel slowly by hand you will get about 20 pounds even from a new engine.

Even with hand pulling with a rope, 120 and 110 is a good number. The internals are most likely in decent condition and that engine will run well.

Jump the starter directly from the battery to see if it is good. Run battery pos. red to the starter terminal and short the black from neg battery terminal to the starter case. If the starter cranks the engine, then it is the ignition switch, the solenoid, or high resistance or a break in the battery cables.

OEM manuals I download them and print out a copy and make a book form. I also print out the pages to take out to the boat when working on it. If the page gets crudded up I print a new one :)

Which do I start with first? Ignition switch, solenoid or battery cables? Not sure how to deal with high resistance. It was running last summer. My dad saw it. So the starter must work. Would the cold have anything to do with it?

Ya know with this bitter cold up here. (-6 for a high on Saturday) I haven?t made it out to try getting the starter to work. But I was talking to my dad over the weekend and told him what was going on. He asked if I had it in neutral. To be honest I don?t know. So as soon as it warms up a little I?m going back out there and checking. If it is I?m going to feel like such an idiot.

I got out there the day before yesterday and checked the control lever to see if the outboard was in gear. Interesting thing with the controller is there isn?t a definitive click between forward and reverse. So I can?t tell if it was in gear or not. It?s supposed to be warm (high 20?s ? low 30?s) this weekend so I?ll try to get the battery hooked up and see if I can get things rockin.

Boy I love successful weekends. My boys and I got the battery hooked up and found neutral on the controller and the starter came right to life. With the starter I was able to get 130lbs of compression on the top cylinder and 120lbs on the lower cylinder. I am getting very excited things are looking very promising.

Hurrikain and franzmarine are the place to go they know each other and will help alot,They can also be contacted at Lonestar boats on the yahoo club sites (cant remember) Had to look Yahoo groups lonestar boats.I sold my 35HP 1983 Chrysler last spring and have a manual for it,I will share but yours is much older,but the same motor.

I didn?t even know there was a Spooner Wisc. Dew 2. No Spooner is just my nickname. I?m curious how your ?83 35h.p. motor can be the same as my ?65 50h.p.. I have found Hurrikain and Franz Marine and I have talked with them a little. I?m a little sticker shocked at the prices Franz threw at me but I guess it is what it is.
I?m in Minnesota and have found a place called Twin City Outboards that shows some promise. The only part that bugs me with them is they have to see everything. How much is a new impeller? I don?t know bring in the old one and I?ll tell ya? How much is a carb kit? I don?t know bring it in and I?ll tell ya? So we?ve been playing THAT game.
