Brand spanking new boat owners. Bought a used boat and trying to refurb. Has a 1978 mercury 1400 outboard 140 HP thunderbolt. The wires all over this thing seem to be crumbling. We have already successfully switch out quite a few but we are having a hard time find out the name of the pictured part.

So hoping someone here would be willing to help us identify a part.

Welcome aboard.

I believe that is what's called a mercury switch. Not because it's on a Mercury outboard, but it uses mercury to complete a path to ground to stop the motor of it's tilted to high by grounding the ignition.

Does it have any numbers on it? What is the serial number of the outboard?

It took me awhile to find this part in the parts catalogue at mercury marines website. For my motor (1970 650) it was on the first page with the top cowl and mounts, not where I thought to look at all.

https://www.mercurymarine.com/en/ca/parts-and-accessories/parts-catalog

This helped me identify a lot of parts, I know nothing about boats or their motors but the folks here are quite helpful.

good luck

Some Mercs mount the switch on the exhaust cover plates, some are mounted on the front cowl support. Some mercury switches have one wire, some have 2 wires. I looked on the front cowl support for Pinks motor using the serial number and came up empty.

Pink - One wire or two (can't tell in the picture) and have you removed it to look for a part number on the back side?

I went to the link Link linked (???) - https://public-mercurymarine.sysonli...=englangDB=eng

Found it - It's a two wire. P/N 58124A4 and called a SWITCH, MERCURY

A pricey little bugger. $50-$70.
