Re: Identifying year and model of 3 horse Johnson

They made 3hp models pre about 1968 and again from about 89 to 2001 but I don't think there were any in between. May be wrong though.

A trawl through the parts diagrams at "http://epc.brp.com/default.aspx?brands=ej&lang=e" may enable you to get close enough to the right age but really you need the model number then you should be able to ID it from "http://www.storesonline.com/site/573683/page/599222"

The plug type fitted may not be anything to go on they could be wrong!

It sounds as though all you need to do is clean the carb jets though.

J6J was the correct plug for 1952-1956 JW models. Then they used J4J for several years.

If those plugs are original or the correct plug you have a JW-10, JW-11 or JW-12.

If they have been substituted for the J4J it could be any JW made after 1956.

I don't remember when the J6J was discontinued in favor of the J6C, but it was a loooong time ago.

Maybe someone could ID it from a pic.

Go to http://www.old-omc.de/ They have all the old sale brochurs. Pick out the one that has color and decals that match yours. Pre-1956 was green, '56-58 were varying maroon schemes, and '59 up were white

Re: Identifying year and model of 3 horse Johnson

Thanks again...You were a big help...I looked at the brochures on the link you gave me...Sure enough mine is a 1967...Any advice on what plugs to replace the J6J's ??? I bought J8C's...They were the closest I could find around here...I read in the brochure that it takes 50:1 ratio for fuel and oil but most people are recomending I go 25:1...Do you know where I can find a procedure for cleaning the jets or putting in a carb kit....You've been so much help I figured I'd push my luck some more....Thanks again

The correct plug for your engine is J4C. J8C is too hot, don't use them. J6C is often substituted for J4C for low speed operation. Gap them at .030".

OMC engines changed from 24:1 mix to 50:1 mix (TC-W oil only) in 1964, so the correct mix is 50:1. Some people still run 24:1 in the little engines up to about 1970, but I wouldn't say "most people" do that. I don't.

Running it at 24:1 will do no real harm. It will smoke and smell more and carbon up sooner. It may be necessary to run the J6J or J6C plugs to minimize fouling.
