1993 200 hp evinrude. I have 6 idle mixture screws on the front of the engine. they are each turned approx 5 times out. is this correct?, the engine seems to be running very rich however I do not want to damage the engine by making the mixture too lean. Does any one know the proper number of turns for each screw, or is it different for each motor. Is there a proper way to adjust the mixture for each carb?

Re: idle adjustment setting

The idle mixture screws only affect the idle circuit. 5 turns out sounds about right, but don't expect all 6 carbs to be set exactly the same, there will be slight differences. In order to correctly set idle mixtures, the engine needs to be run in the water, unrestrained and with the correct propeller installed. A technician with a magnahelic gauge could set all the carbs up in about 45 minutes. Doing it by trial & error could take a couple of hours.

You also want to make sure the engine is running up to correct temp (#1 cause of poor idle) and if you haven't run Engine Tuner thru it lately, a good dose of this decarbonizing treatment could clear up many of your issues.

-John
