Idle adjustment

I have a 1996 120hp Force outboard. Ran perfect till last week then started running rough so I flushed the fuel, changed the fuel filter and cleaned the carbs. Upon further inspection a bad head gasket was my issue. I replaced the head gasket and it fixed my issue however the idle for some reason is now too high. I did not move or adjust any linkage and I put the idle mixture screws back exactly where they were before I cleaned the carbs. Any tips would be appreciated.

Re: Idle adjustment

Well, it seems someone adjusted the idle screw before the misfiring became more obvious and serious. Now that it is fixed, you can just lower the idle screw to achieve 700~800 on water forward gear idle rpm or about 900~1000 RPM neutral. Verify also nobody messed with the fuel-air mixture screw and set it at 1 turn out from seat in position.

Re: Idle adjustment

Please note that on these later Force engines there is no automatic linkage adjustment. IF YOU CHANGE THE IDLE STOP SCREW SETTING you must also reset the throttle control cable.

ONLY those Force engines with MERCURY controls-- Not sure exactly what year they changed.

Re: Idle adjustment

As early as 1990 they started using the Merc stuff.
They used the Merc stuff from 94 on.
You need to post a pic of the linkage and the serial#s.
