idle,die,flood

I have an intermittent problem with my 1990 50hp Evinrude. Sometimes when I'm moving at very slow speed, just above idle, it will sputter and die. After that it seems as though the engine is immediately flooded (well it is flooded based on the gas dripping from under the bonnet). It typically happens when I'm easing in either at the dock or up to anchor. If I let it sit a bit it will start fine and may not act up again for weeks.

The only thing I notice is sometimes I heard a loud click from the engine after I've tried unsucessfully to crank it. It has an electic choke and I'm wondering if it's that that is causing my problem.

Any ideas?

Also, can someone recommend a good manual for this engine. I'm particularly looking for one with a decent troubleshooting section.

Thanks!

You can get manuals at the bottom left corner of this page, but I prefer a real shop manual over the Seloc and Clymer. Shop manuals are usually engine specific, where as the others might cover ten different motors. You could probably get a shop manual from your local dealer.

bet it is the choke or the float valve. You can check the float visually, just make mental note of where the linkage is at open choke and see if it is open when this situation occurs. If the float valve is bad the fuel tank bulb might not get hard at prime and you will be able to pump fuel out of the carbs.

Check your float level and if the floats are sinking or sunk(fuel logged), the float shutoff valve for damage in the carburator. And as SCO says: choke setup could be loose and vibrating closed at idle. Idle screw would not normally flood the engine if not set rite

I THOUGHT MY MERCURY HAD CHOKE PROBLEMS ECT...
UNTIL I RAN MY MOTOR AT NIGHT WITH THE COWLING OFF.I WAS AMAZED TO SEE THE SPARK PLUG WIRES ARCING.SOMETIMES IT'S THE EASY SOLUTIONS THAT ARE HARDEST TO FIND.

I'll try that and see. Thanks.

I have another question for anyone who knows: I found a website that sells both a shop manual AND a parts manual for my engine. I'm assuming the parts manual actually gives the part #'s so I know how to order what I need while the shop manula only gives the part name. Is that right? Do I need both?

Thanks

If you have the serial mumber of the motor, most of the part numbers can be obtained off the web from exploded views...BUT if the price is rite for the parts book ...git it..
