idle issue

I have been able to adjust the idle on my Volvo 5.0GL and it is running nicely at around 600-700. It's brand new, but needed a bit of tweaking as it was idling too high.

I have an issue when I come back from a cruise on the river. It wants to idle much higher most times...say around 900. It will eventually come back down, after a minute or so. The issue is when i pull up to the dock I have to do some maneuvering which involves shifting back and forth.

Every time I do this, there is the proverbial "chunk" as the engine tries to engage the outdrive while it's spinning much too fast.

Should I try adjusting the idle a little more? I know if I go too far the engine will simply die out...but I don't want to ruin my outdrive either. Are there other options?

I'm hardly a mechanic, but can accomplish simple tasks around the engine compartment. Thanks for reading this, and all your help in the past.:)

Re: idle issue

You may just need to adjust the end on the throttle cable itself. It may not be pulling the linkage all the way back to idle. The cable should be adjusted so it just puts some tension on the idle stop screw on the carb. Just some, not a lot.

Re: idle issue

Thanks Don...

Like I said...I'm not a mechanic...:)...does this involve removing the throttle cable from the carb to make the adjustment?

And, uh, how does one adjust the the throttle cable?

Thanks again...
