idle problem, 81 chrysler 85 hp

ok heres the deal, the motor runs great new plugs,new gas, new impeller, just used for a week tubing,water skiing, runs strong and goes fast, after idling for say a minute or so it dies, it does it more when the motor is warm.

any ideas? all responses much appreciated

My guess would be poor compression, poor fuel pump or both.
If it were mine, I would check the compression twice (cold motor/warmed motor) to see if all it needs is a fuel pump diaphram.

Get a tachometer and check the idle speed. It should be about 700-750 in forward gear in the water. This turns out to be somewhere around 1,000 rpm in neutral. Significantly lower than that and these engines tend to stall as soon as you put them in gear--especially if the plugs have a little time on them.

Idle adjustment is a screw and locknut in the lower portion if the linkage tower. Turning the screw in opens the butterflies a little more and slightly increases the timing thus raising the idle speed. Don't get too happy with it--a little goes a long way. Try 1/4 to 1/2 turn increments.

thanks frank im hoping its just something like that and not a compression issue the motor runs very strong.
