Idle problem

The engine is a 1996 Johnson 200, compresion is even at 100#'s give or take a couple. I had the link and sink done buy a shop I trust basically for this problem. [Everything was messed up]. It Idles fine @ about 850 RPM, [which it didn`t before], But when I put it in gear it will idle for awhile and then die. I have backed out the Idle scew on the timing until it will fall out and it still does it. Everything else is great, perfect throttle responce and great top end performance.

It's the Amsoil that's doing it.

Seriously, it sounds like the idle is just set a little too low. In neutral, it's OK, but when it goes into gear, there's just too much drag. I don't know how a guy sets the idle on that engine, but bump it up to 950 or so in neutral. That should solve the problem.

Is Quick Start working? When turning the idle speed screw, you should use a timing light for an idle timing check, It is bound to be out of specs if the screw is completely out. If it will not idle when in spec, you have other problems.

I knew that was coming.

I can keep it Idleing in gear if I give it just a bit of gas, but it's a foot throttle so it won't hold without my foot on it. I know that the plates are suppose to be closed at Idle, but will it hurt anything to tighten the throttle stop just a little?

OK, here's a (kinda) wierd thing. Just because you back off the screw on the starboard side doesn't mean the timer base moves. It's supposed to but sometimes it doesn't. If it doesn't move, nothing changes.

Look on the port side under the flywheel. There's probably another screw on a bracket there. Screwing that screw in will pust the timer base and bring up the idle.

Take a look and let us know.

Not sure which model number your engine is ,but looking at an exploded view of a 96' J200STLEDM it shows slow speed needle adjustment screws on the lower face of the carb bodies.If your carbs are like these it may just need adjusting to a slightly richer/leaner setting.I had that same issue with a then new 96' 70 hp engine and mine were set about 1 1/4 turn too lean.

Thanks, Screwing that screw out [on the Starboard side], didn`t change the Idle even not being in gear, I'll try the other you mentioned and see. It's just so close, and just needs a little help. Like I say, just slight pedal preasure keeps it running and it Idles good.

I've never had a large OMC engine before, but I'm beginning to like this beast.
