I am having idle problems. It will idle for a while but seems to try to cut out. It will die most of the time shifting from forward to reverse. After an extended run, it may idle fine with a little skip on occasion. The bulb never seems to be tight. However, I do not detect any gas leakage from the carbs or flooding. I can live with it but kinda perplexing at the loading ramp and a little embarrassing trying to keep this thing running. It always seems I have a captive ramp audience during these moments. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Tim

I had the same problem with my 1974 Johnson. After turning over all stones, I finally found that the reeds were not seating completely. The boat ran fine from mid to top end, but it would die at an idle, thus making it tough to load back on the trailor. You said the bulb never seems to be tight, I would try replacing it first, and then give the carbs a complete inspection and possibly a rebuild. Dont forget the fuel pump.
To check the reeds, you must remove them completely. Then shine a flashlight into the reed blocks, if any light is seen around the the edges, replace the reeds.
One tell, tell sign of the reeds being bad is if the engine seems to backfire or sputter in the carbs when the engine dies.

hello
try a complte linkge sync. also you may try moving the idle fuel mix scres(if used) out about 1/2 turn or so. the popback is due to a lean condition in the crankcase.

Thanks for the advice. Rodbolt, the idle mix screws are the ones with the red plastic around them??? If not, what is that screw?? I need to take a look at whats going on before I make any further comments. A lean condition could be responsible for my idle problem do you think? Thanks for the responses Basscat and Rodbolt.
Tim

I had similar problems and the cure was to reset the throttle linkage adjustments according to the shop manual procedure. That took care of it. Can't hurt to check it out.

The linkage would not have anything to do with my bulb not getting tight would it? I have replaced the primer bulb, lines, and connectors and still have a spongy feeling bulb. Any suggestions?
Tim

While it is running the bulb will not be hard. It will feel spongy. Reset your throttle linkage and if that doesn't do it then reset your low idle screw.

Get a good manual and follow the link n sync. Your local library may have one or they are usually available on ebay or believe it or not, right here at iboats.

Re: Idle problems 1993 40 hp Rude

I took the boat out today. I Set the idle mix screws out 1/2 turn. It still cut out on me and did not want to run. I turned both mixture screws in to the point they lightly seated and backed them out 2 turns. I cranked the boat and it now runs fine. No problem with cutting out or loading the boat. It seems my problems are solved. Thanks guys for all of the advice. It amazes me that there is no fee on this site.(Not to give anyone any ideas). However I'd pay an annual fee for access to the advice that I have received on this site anyday.

How many carbs did that motor have? My yamaha 30 has 3 carbs, all with different factory settings on the screw adjustments.
