idle problems

My 79 merc 1150 runs great at full throttle but idles like crap. It idled perfectly until I changed plugs from NGK to Champion. I put the old plugs back in (not fouled) with the same result. It starts up very easily and idles ok until I open it up then pull back to neutral, then it immediately dies. I'm doing a compression test this weekend, but I'm wondering: will a motor with bad compression run that good at WOT? My plan of attack is this:
1) Compression test and test for good spark
2) Adjust idle mixture
3) Clean and rebuild carbs
4) Rebuild fuel pump
5) Set timing
Am I on the right track? Please let me know if I'm leaving anything out or going in the wrong order. Any comments or similar experiences are greatly appreciated.

Re: idle problems

I think you are right on with the fuel area.
Compression is probably ok but a good place to start.Does it idle ok when first started?
Ive heard these motors need to have the timing just right and and timing was retarded slightly from the original setting.
Check with the guys at Johns Old Mercury Web Site
www.pfs-ware.com Very active site, excellent links, lots of knowledge.

Re: idle problems

Poor idling is also a classic case of cold running. It doesn't matter if the engine has been run WFO or not. Check the thermostat too.
