Well finally got the approval from the other half to drop a little money on our 1st boat. I believe the motor is mid to late 70s,Mariner 40hp tag on left side read "40 BE ser.#403719".Claim was motor was maintained regularly and by looks I believe so.However it took a short while to start and didnt idle well.I was able to cruise for awhile but due to weeds in prop i had to drop to idle and it would die again ,start again and cruise idle drop to idle died would not start (flooded)towed back to launch site.Question,What is the right hand lever's function on the control module? And directly under the key is a momentary switch I believe says [choke].I think the motor is running to rich...or maybe i dont know how to start and run this maritime machine Please any advice ! thanks

The second lever is for fast idle. This is to be used when starting the engine. The choke gives the engine more fuel when starting "Easy way of saying it"<br /><br />As for the engine not running right...check compression and check ign. If you are luck it may just be the carb that needs cleaning and adjusting.<br /><br />TMD

Hey Mike,<br /><br />If you intend to keep this motor running as DYI it is a very good idea to spend a few bux on a manual.<br /><br />Thoubleshooting, repairs, service, specs, schematics and data. Well worth the price.<br /><br />May use link on this site.
