I have a brand new (Well 30 hours on her now) 2004 Tohatsu 40 hp motor. The idle speed in gear is 1000 rpm, It should be around 750 in gear. It is 1200 RPMS out of gear.

Dont worry, I havnt been shifting into gear at 1200 rpms (been using the choke to drop it down to 500-800 rpms).

I went to the dealer and he dug out the factory repair manuals and showed me how to adjust the idle since it would just be a lot quicker for me to do it then to cart the boat down to him.

Well I can go so far as to take the whole idle adjustment screw out totally, and the idle doesnt drop down at all.

What do I do? Thanks for the help.

-John

The throttle control cable linkage is set wrong. Take to any mechanic and they can set it for you.

Elvin
AvalonProGrp
InternetOutboardsUSA

You are correct, that did fix it after some tinkering, (the cables were too long/short in terms of connector.

INTERNETOUTBOARDSUSA ,

Is Avalon part of, or use to be Dangelo Marine? I purchased my '97 18E Nissan from Dangelo, and flew it back to NY, with me. Still runs great. Glad to see a dealer answering tech questions, here.

John,

It's us! We sold the business in 2000 to a venture capital group that ended up failing in 2002. Since our non-compete agreement was no longer in effect we opened back up in January of last year. It sure is a small world. Since we started back you would not believe the number of people we have been contacted by that purchased engines from us in the last 50 years. We do not use the D'Angelo name anymore due to D'Angelo Marine Exhaust in Ft. Lauderdale. If we can ever do anything for you let us know.

Re: Idle speed on a Tohatsu 40

hey i have the same motor 2003 plus nissan 40hp. took it out yesteday for first time. it ran fine at first. but after we went out at low throttle it would stall out and not want to start. it wouldnt start at all unless i pulled out the choke all the way.
the guy who i bought it from said he had no problems with it but only used it 4x in the last year. do you know were the throttle adjustment screw is and is there a adjustment for the amount of air it gets?? besides the choke

You do realize you are opening up a six year old thread, that was about a completely different problem, right?

As mentioned in your other posting, you will want to get a Factory service manual from a dealer, and go through the fuel system.
