Hello,

I have had a stall at idle issue with my 1999 Johnson 115 for some time. It is a weird stall, the engine just conks out like someone shut it off. It will restart without a problem. It tends to happen when the engine is hot and I am trying to dock. Please watch a video clip to see it stall: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9e_GnesyM1o

The carbs have been rebuilt, I have done a link and sync a couple times, the optical sensor was replaced, and I just recently replaced the power pack with a CDI unit and new gray CDI spark plug wires. Nothing has helped although it seems a little better with the new power pack.

The problem happens in out out of gear and makes docking a nightmare. Sometimes I can idle for minutes with no problem though. I am thinking it is electrical since it happens so suddenly... not dying out like a fuel problem. Could it be an intermittent coil pack problem? How can I test?

Thank you for your help

Anyone? - I know this is a tough question because I can't find anything on the forums about it and I have been trying to solve it for some time. I also went through all the electrical connections and cleaned them and used a little dielectric grease.

I have the same motor and the same problem. I'm thinking the plugs are fouling.

Re: Idle Stall - 1999 Johnson 115

It doesn't look like the plugs. Mine are pretty clean- brownish with no excessive buildup.

Another symptom: After running for 15+ minutes when the engine is warm, I have to very gradually increase the throttle to speed up or the engine will stall. If I push down on the throttle normally it will just bog and die. Sometimes I can get the throttle up a little bit but the engine will stay at the same RPMs for a few seconds and then suddenly take off. Any ideas?

When the engine is cool I can essentially floor it and it runs great.

That?s exactly what my 99 115 is doing. Let me know if you find out what it is.

Thanks,

I have a similar problem with a 2002 150 and dont know what it is. Runs great if you can finess the throttle up to get her to take off. If you just slam the throttle up it dies though. Im going to try replacing the fuel line from tank to motor. I think its sucking air.

I am having similar problems with my 2000 115 hp, although I only recently purchased it. Both the idle kill and the touchy throttle up. Has anyone actually gotten a technical answer to a problem on this website?

Do any of you guys experience a noticable tic when the engine is at idle? I have posted this issue here and on other sites as well with no response. Almost sounds to me like it is under the flywheel and/or starter cover. Otherwise engine runs fine at higher speeds.

To try and locacte the tic, I pulled the flywheel cover off today. Although everything looks OK with no metal filings, it looks like the starter bendix gear rattles on the shaft a bit. I wonder if that is the source of my tic?
