Re: idleing to high

Howdy,

Did you look in the service manual?

Go to the adult sticky above and download the appropriate manual (about 1.4GB)......if you have DSL, bring your lunch and dinner.....it'll take a while.....even with cable it will take quite a while......

Right-click and "save as" to your desktop. Then open it with Adobe Acrobat Reader.

if you are using a dialup, well, forget it. you cannot download a file that big usually.

You'll have to go out and buy yourself a manual.

There should be complete instructions on how to set the idle.

Generally speaking, the idle RPM for most all stern drives should never be more than about 650 rpm or so. Lower is usually better as long as it doesn't quit when going into or out of gear.

Ayuh,...

And,.. Idle speed is set with a combination of Timing, the carb mixture,+ the Idle screw...

I set mine to 500 rpm in gear.
The idle adjustment is the last adjustment to be made when tuning - after timing then idle mixture and any other adjustments you might be making.

I didn't mention it but once you get the service manual you'll "read all about it"......But the idle speed MUST be set (as indicated above) with the throttle cable DISCONNECTED from the carburetor. This way the cable and throttle/shift cables do not influence the idle speed by slightly moving or holding the throttle arm above idle..... .

Then when you do reinstall the cable to the carb, you only want to have the shift quadrant (throttle cable) to apply very slight pressure on the carb (in the "closed" direction) when the throttle/shift lever is returned to idle from any throttle setting above idle.

There is usually a small amount of "backlash" in the linkage so you might have to fool with the settings in small increments to find that spot where the cable is applying slight pressure on the throttle arm against the idle adjustment screw.

If you allow it to apply too much pressure, it could bend something or stretch the cable "jacket", or both.

The only thing you are going to find is a cheap aftermarket manual. Why don't you just go up to the Adults Only sticky and download the OEM manual for your engine and drive. It's free too.

If you are operating from a dialup internet connection remember, It's a 1.4GB (PDF)..... It just won't happen on a dialup.

You must know someone with cable or DSL, you can have them download the manual and either copy it to a USB thumb-drive or burn it to a DVD.

Then you'll have it.

I have both the paper manual and the downloaded manuals It's nice to be able to print out the pages of the part I want to use and not have to worry about getting my paper manual all greasy!
