Just took my new to me 1981 century mercruiser 228 for the first time out. I did not get past the ramp. Boat idles fine, once I put it in gear it cuts off unless I am quick on the throttle. I have new plugs, cap, rotor, coil, wires, and a pertronix ingintorII kit. The boat was inspected at a dealer 2 weeks ago and was given an ok. Could it be the card needs to be adjusted, or something like that? If I am quick on the throttle seems ok . Maybe I need a new card like an edelbrock. So far I have owned this boat 1 month and have only been to the boat ramp. Any help?

When you shift does the shift interlock activate and kill the motor,if so the lower shift cable may need replacement

Re: idles fine but in gear cuts off

If the interlock activates going into gear the lower cable is binding. We need to know if it`s working or not .
the switch is supposed to work ONLY coming out of gear when there is a load on the prop.should not work on trailer.
Trying to narrow it down.

Is it possible I did not let the engine warm up long enough? idle time was about 2-3 mins.

I didn't read the sticky... but before you replace anything i would try adjusting the shift interrupt switch
