I have a 93 Toyota T100. Awesome truck, powerful, fun, full size, can tow a lot. Having said all that, I'm afraid to even check the MPG (luckily it's not my daily driver) but I would be happy if it even got above 15 mpg...

Re: If a person wanted a new truck with good mpg??

That's the first positive comment I've ever heard about the colorado. Anyone else have one that they like?? I didn't know they put a four-cylinder in one. I might have to reconsider if they get 25mpg. I know a fellow with a colorado with the 5-cylinder and he hates it. Of course, he's the only guy I know that has one and you know how it is when someone puts that kind of thing in your head.

I looked at an '82 isuzu diesel on ebay that appeared to be in really nice shape, but couldn't believe that it already had a bid for 5,300 bucks. And diesel costing 5 bucks a gallon!!!??? Gees!!!

the '80 model chevy luv 4X4 I could've gotten for 3000 but it didn't have power steering which I like and it had a 4-speed. I like a 5-speed. I couldn't bear to part with 3000 for a 30 year old vehicle, either. It's on the dallas craiglist if anyone wants to see it. the hood stickers are gastly also!:(

I can't believe the sticker on those tundras was even close to a chevy. I'm going to go take some pictures if I get the chance just to show ya'll I'm not full of crap.:D That one shocked me, no joke. The chevy seems to be a lot better deal to me---wish I could afford a brand new one! They had a black 4-door that was SHARP!

It does seem to be a good time to buy a new vehicle now with the situation like it is. I'm thinking of selling both my old ones and getting something newer or possibly even new if I can earn enough this summer.
Later,

Hello, What's the matter, with you guys ignoring a nice size GM pickup??? Here's a good example of a decent truck, it's on the smallish size, similar to the Chevy S-10 it replaced, it'll tow 4000 lbs at least with the bigger 245hp 5cyl engine (a derivative of the world class overhead cam 6cyl in the trailblazer) and produce good gas milage! Chevy's having money issues, and you guys are looking for foriegn vehicles? IMO, this is better then most of those, at this time!

Besides, How can you ignore the older S-10's? They're a fairly compact truck that can tow 6000lbs, with the 4.3V6 auto. 2WD and get decent around town milage, my previous 96' Sonoma Vortec 4.3 V6 auto. 2WD got 20mpg around town, and my present 95 S-10 gets 22mpg around town. How can you even compare a smaller 6cyl Dodge, or 4cyl Ford Ranger?

That might be your opinion but it is surely not fact. The Tacoma is a much better truck on all counts compared to the Colorado. Take a close look at how cheaply made a colorado is. Not to mention the whimpy towing capacity and payload capcity of the GM. Maybe someday they will get it right.

I had a friend of mine lend me his brand new V6 4WD Toyota Tacoma yrs ago when they 1st came out, I was not impressed, it was so high off the ground, and wishy, washy, I thought it would roll way too easy  plus it didn't appear to have any grunt! It couldn't get out of it's own way. I'll take my S-10 over it any day!

As far as the new Toyota, over the Colorado, I'd say, Yes you probably get what you pay for, but No Toyota is not cheap, or even reasonable, I think they're way too expensive, especially being foriegn vehicles! That's why I bought a New Santa Fe LX V6 4WD in 2002, instead of a new Highlander, It had even more equipment, for about $10K less! and got 24-30mpg on the highway!

The late 80's to 95/96 Toyota Tacomas with the 3.0 Litre V-6 were definitely dogs, which is what you might be referring to Mike?
They were underpowered, poor on fuel and had ongoing head gaskets problems. It was the only 'power' option in those trucks at the time and they are generally worth avoiding.;)
Fortunately, Toyota replaced and upsized that motor and those trucks have been on the rise ever since.
As for the gas mileage angle the Tacoma is still available with a 4 cylinder I think, although I wouldn't expect it to have much towing/hauling capability.
As for the Colorado I've read they have had a few quality problems?
I would highly recommend to anyone to buy a Auto/Truck consumer reports magazine. It's a great read and gives some excellent insight into these trucks.
Anyone know where the Toyota's trucks are made? I thought they were made in the states?

Tacoma is built in California, and the Tundra is built in Texas I believe.

Well, Thanks for that info BP, That truck left me scratching my head  Like what's so special about Toyota trucks? But that makes sense. I like Toyota's too, but they're always priced a little out of my range

I had a 87 nissan hardbody a couple years out of high school. That thing was a rock. I hated it a first but then it grew on me and I decide to make it a low rider. It had a 2.4 liter 4 cyl. that would not quit. (it had 8 spark plugs though) I sold it with 257k on the clock to a guy that used it to haul bricks and he got 385 before the engine died. I don't remeber the milige it got because at the time it wasn't a concern, between gas being so cheap and me being young , dumb and just not careing. I wouldn't mind haveing another of those pick ups around. Another little truck I always wanted was a late 70's datsun, with the cool body line that formed a bullet under the extra cab window.

The late 80's to 95/96 Toyota pickups are not Tacomas. The Tacoma did not come out until 1995. With that said, I agree that the 3.0 is weak for a V-6. I bought a 1994 pickup brand new and opted for the even weaker 22RE four banger because it is a more durable motor and not that much weaker than the 3.0. It has been the best vehicle that I have owned. It was made in the USA.

The '05-up Tacoma's are the larger ones. They V-6 in them is impressive when it comes to power.

I guess the Toyota may cost a little more than some of the other options, but from what I have experienced and seen thru other owners, they are worth the extra $$.

My underpowered Toyota has sure seen a lot of miles towing either my motorcycle trailer, boat or camper. It may be slow, but it gets the job done. In 149k miles, I have not "had" to replace anything other than one oxgen sensor and a couple of mufflers on the truck. I opted to replace the timing chain at 100k because they are prone to break at about that mileage, and replaced the alternator when I found a broken wire on it that was causing the battery light to come on. I could have spliced it, but decided to buy new since it had over 100k on it.

Re: If a person wanted a new truck with good mpg??

The new Tundra is built in a brand new plant in San Antonio Texas. They invested eight hundred fifty million dollars on that plant. They also opened an engine plant in Alabama. Not sure of the exact location.
These trucks continue to change. Nissan made a great product for years, suffered some financial problems and were bought by Renault in 1998-1999. Since then the newer designs have been flawed. The Titan has a world of problems and just doesnt sell. Rumor is they are closing the Titan plant and Chrysler will be building their trucks for 2009.
Whoever owns that T100, hang on to it. Go on ebay and try to find a nice one for under $7000. And they stopped building them in 1998.
Consumer Reports says the new GM small trucks are all built so cheaply they won't recommend buying one. Also, the engineering still carries over from the old S-10. And if you ever got suckered in to buy one of those with the 2.8 v6 and the r-700 automatic, one or the other blew before 75,000 miles.

Re: If a person wanted a new truck with good mpg??

Boy this is some interesting stuff! I didn't know about the 3.0 v6's in the toyotas----I thought every engine they ever made was reliable! The main thing about the toyotas I don't like is the mileage which I believe to be really poor, and the leg-room which is also usually crappy. the price is outrageous, also, but the resale value is much higher than other trucks which may make up for it.
I also knew nothing about the nissans being bought out by renault and possibly their new ones being made by Chrysler. I'd never consider a chrysler except maybe an early 70's charger or barracuda:)
I also like to look at the consumer reports stuff and think I'll definitely peruse some of that stuff before I even think of buying a new or newer truck.

JBJ if that 70's Challenger or Cuda you find happens to have a Hemi in it hold on. At the auctions some have sold for over $1,000,000.00 I think I put enough zeros in ther to come up with a million dollars.
And as we said, a couple of us have pre '07 Tundras that we both are getting over 20 mpg with the 4.7 v8. The '05 &06 Tundra has a 6 sp auto, higher horsepower (282) and will tow 7100 lbs. and most come with the factory class 4 hitch. Those same models have a stripper 2 dr with a 4.0 v6 with 245 hp. It can tow 5000 lb.

Re: If a person wanted a new truck with good mpg??

Just bought an 08 GMC Extended cab 1500 5.3L 3:42 rear. Looks like I'm getting 24-25 on long streches of freeway driving and 18-20 around town. I upgraded from a 93 Ranger 3.0L w/ 250,000 that got 20-21 on the hyway. I got it for $7,000 under MSRP. EVERY dealer in SoCal is having problems. No one buying anything even the high MPG cars are not selling here. You need a great credit score to get a loan now days.

I have an 03 ranger with the same engine. I thought I got good mileage (20-23MPG hwy) but hearing guys get the same or better out of a fullsize doesnt make me very happy.

Re: If a person wanted a new truck with good mpg??

That's the thing to me.....the full size trucks aren't getting that much worse if not better gas mileage than the small size trucks today. I would of course rather drive the fullsize because it has more power when I need to pull my pontoon boat or utility trailer and because it obviously has more room and is more comfortable. I'm not going to buy one of these "small economy" trucks to save 5 or 600 dollars a year at best and sacrifice all the positives of a fullsize truck. It's a shame there's not a small size truck out there that gets 30mpg like they once had.
