If fixed, how much is a 1978 200hp Black Max worth?

So i decided to get rid of my boat. It sucks.

But do you think it would be a reasonable idea to re-build the motor to working condition, and then sell it to refinance a decent , older , small ski boat next year?

How much would this outboard be worth in fully working condition?

I paid 1500 for it, with the crappy hull.

First, what was/is wrong with the motor?
78 an older motor.
Is a marine mech gonna do it or yourself?
Does it have power tilt/trim or "lift assist pistons"?
Motors are costly to buy and just as costly to repair.
Hope this helps a little

NADA lists the average retail value at $270.

I would take it to the auto shop at my school, which has people who are certified to work on small engines.. or something like that.

It does have power tilt/trim

I don't quite know what's wrong with it yet.

The NADA value is hardly realistic in this case, but I wouldn't put too much money into unless you planned on keeping it.
A new 200 HP engine is probably somewhere around $20K.

So do you think it would be realistic to use this to finance maybe a $5000 boat?

(My dad actually paid for the original $1500, so for me, the cost for parts would start at $0)

Exactly what kind of condition is this motor in?
It sounds tired. Does it run?

It runs after a lot of different starting methods, and spraying fuel mixture into the carbs and choking and un-choking it...

But it never cuts out once it's actually running.

It could some minor fuel deliver issues which is common on Mercs.
Might be worth putting a few dollars into.
You'll need to pinpoint the issue(s) before making a decision.
A shop will probably put you over the edge though.
One of my neighbors took his 150 to a shop and they wanted $300 a pop to rebuilt his carbs and there are 3 on the motor.

I would be doing the work myself, with the (free) aid of a certified mechanic.

Worth it?

I'd do a compression check. If the pressures are good, and even, then do the probe in the spark plug hole trick to see of there's excess free play in any of the rod or wrist pin bearings. I would say if you have to open that old motor up, you could easily put 1 to 2 grand in parts in it, plus maybe some block work.

The rest is pretty reasonable. Used parts are available all over, and setting it up and testing is pretty straight forward.

I would guess, though, that you maybe have a pretty tired motor that wouldn't be worth restoring. It would be worth more as parts.

hope it helps

It would be my non-expert gut opinion that there would not be enough "value" in that motor to make it pay for another boat and motor that is better than what you already have. You might get a better idea of this by checking the resale value locally (local boat shop, newspaper, Craigslist?) of other boats/motors of your vintage to see what they are selling for in your area.

Just my thoughts...
