Re: "If I can't have it, nobody can" mentality.. societal causes?

Thanks guy... I though it was just me... but I see it happens everywhere.

As well as the 'I'm not letting you pass' drivers, the one who really get my goat are the 'I'm going to pass you and then slow down to 10k less than you were doing'. ARRRRRR!!:mad::mad: If you want to do 10k less than me, STAY BEHIND ME AND DO IT!!!

Had a really nasty one a few years back...
Towing the boat home after a weekend away (500km away!). Approaching the end of an overtaking lane (and still doing 100k) and I see in the rear-view a car wringing the last horse out of his engine... I see the end of the lane coming, and cars approaching in the opposite direction and think 'He's not going to make it'. Well, he doesn't let up, comes past me at about 120-130k, then lands on the brake for all he's worth 'cause he doesn't want to rear-end the car ahead. That means I have to brake really hard (with the boat on the back) to avoid rear-ending him. Then, as the lanes return to being single, he slows down TO 80k!!!! I could have killed the little sh1t!!!

I think the mentality of the 'I'll do 80 in the single and then speed up at the overtaking lane' is more due to driver confidence. They aren't comfortable with another car so close to them when they're doing 110k in the single lane. Once they get a lane between them and the oncoming traffic, they're ok...

I used to hate that when I had the old engine (Toy 4.2l) but now, with the turbo 6.5l I just floor it and leave them, happy to do do what ever they like.

The drivers I really hate are the 'You're towing a boat so I won't let you in'... You all know who I'm talking about... A slow and excruciatingly painful death to them!!!

Now, if I see a driver who is in one of these categories... I make it impossible for them to pass! (Lowkee, that would NOT be you. No problem with people who are going quicker than me, I'll even make it easier for them to pass)...

Having driven all over the world, including USA, New Zealand, both ends of Russia, the UK and a lot in Asia, Australian drivers are the least considerate and Perth drivers are the worst in Australia!

Rant over, soapbox vacant for the next person. :D

Chris.......

Tackle Washer, If I may be so bold to add "Alberta Drivers".
In the summer the tourist flock to the fantastic lakes we have here in the shuswap/okanogan. They drive at 140 km+ on the straight streches, "BUT" you add a little itty bitty corner and those flat landers back down to a crawl.
and when the road straightens out, back to warp speed!!!!
OK then there are the people who think a 4x4 can do the speed limit "plus" on a icey road, "always love to see those jerks nosed into a snow bank or ditch"

BC has a standard display for bad drivers in the province.

They have red and white plates that say "Alberta"

Not sure if you've been in Kelowna lately, but I am dreading this summer. See, we just got an HOV lane (right hand as well) and the residents can't figure it out. I'm really scared when the Albertans decide to not use the lane but turn right pulling a 40' fifth wheel.

By the way, what was the steap hill you were refering to, salmo creston sky way or the anarchist mountain or the blueberry paulson or the new denver to kaslo road, and on and on, lots of steep hills, even pulling up to big white can be a chore.
ever tried the little fort to bridge lake hill????

I don't know, I wasn't there and cannot read his (the other driver's) mind.
But, I have found from watching the way people drive, sometimes and I repeat sometimes, people are deep in thought and their mind is simply following the road. When a car pulls in front of them moving faster they speed up because, they're following. Someone pulls behind them going slower they slow down, because, they're following (even those behind them). It's a subconscious thing. It's not that they are intending to be rude or not paying attention. They are simply thinking of something else and driving in an autonomous state. A lot of us do it, we're thinking of something and miss our turn. One time I was driving East on I-70 and missed the I-270 exit to Washington and ended up in Baltimore. What was I thinking? Went to the Inner Harbor for dinner and then drove home.

I think it was the Salmo Creston. Was a few years back.

Did the Kootneys for 2 weeks a few years back pulling with a 94 GMC with the 6.5L Pain in the butt as I had cooling troubles (was a problem with the older 6.5L). Did the same trip a couple years later with a 01 with a Duramax. Same trailer but a world of difference.

Trailer is under 7,000 so it is no issue for the Duramax. Done the Little Fort hill with a 94 gas GMC (350) and my current truck. Again, no issue with what I have now. Took it slow with the gasser.

Nice thing is I still get 15+ mpg towing while the gasser was 8 or so and the old diesel was 10-12. So I can go faster, not overheat and get better mileage towing.

I drive the Baltimore/Washington metro area and people here must be different. Everyone is courteous, and no one is ever angry while driving. We hardly have any rush hour traffic, I usually have the road all to myself.

Believe that one and I'll sell you a bridge.

There are schmucks in all walks of life and in all societies.

I try not to be a schmuck.

I try not to let them get me down.

I am human, so, at times, I fail.

pffft... You guys gotta come drive in Massachusettes :)

Mass. was nothing......A few years ago we left the poconos, crossed jersey, over the Tappan Zee thru NY to 95 bout an hour and a half. Hit the Connecticut line and it took THREE hours to go a hundred miles. Hit the Rhode Island line and right back up to speed. Massachusettes was like driving in Jersey.......Connecticut is my worst experience, even worse than NYC:eek:
