If I rebuilt the boat can I get recertified?

When Bayliner sold the boat/motor/trailer you could only get the engines they had for them.<br />Basically the 15 footer got a 50, the 17 got the 85 (mine) and the 19 footer got a 125.<br /><br />When I do a USCG caculation I can get a 120 but really all I want is a 115. I boat at 4000-6500 ft and lost about 10% of an already limited amount of Hp. <br /><br />Can I get the CG to recertify the boat or do I talk to the Motor vehicle devision?

Well,........... I'll take a Shot at it.... Even If I Know I'm Probably Wrong..........<br /><br />

Forget About It .........<br /><br />Nobody is Ever going to Look at that little plate rivited to the boat.........<br /><br />I have previously ran a 135hp Tower of Power on a little 1967 14' Glastron Jet-Flite,.... rated at 60hp...........<br />I ripped the tag off the hull,.. actually it was faded too bad to read,+ I sanded it off when preping for paint.......<br /><br />I was also "Inspected" by the Local authorities,....All they wanted to See, was the C/G Safety Gear...... They Never even Questioned the fact I had this Monster Motor hanging off the back........<br />As a matter of Fact,...... I just last year, found a 150hp Tower of Power to put on that Same boat,..... It just needs a bit of a Rebuild to resurrect it(the boat, not the motor).....<br />Hopefully,... She'll Float again This Summer....... Depends on how much Energy I can squeeze out of My Lady's 15yr old Son........... Ayuh,.... Well,... Maybe Next Year......... <br /><br />The Starcraft in My avatar has a sticker that states it's rated for the 140hp that Was in it..... But, It's Now sporting a 205hp, 4.3LX,+ Nobody has Ever Questioned That Either.......<br /><br />I'm SURE that somebody is going to come along,+ tell you that everything You've Ever Owned is going to be Sued Away from You if you install a Bigger than rated motor on Your Boat,.........<br /><br />I Say Bull$h!t................. ;)

You have altered the structure of the boat from the original mfr's spec. I can't see how anyone would be willing to certify that the new structure would be rated for any higher HP. I'm sure you did a top rate job, but how is anyone else going to verify your quality of workmanship or the materials that you used ? How would the new structure be evaluated ? What have you done to enable the addition of 30 more HP or the extra weight on the transom ? Can you show any engineering data ? The mfr had a reason they rated the hull as they did and I think you would be hard pressed to find anybody willing to revise that rating. Who would be willing to assume that responsibility ? Can't imagine what the cost would be even if you could find someone. I'd say repower with what you want (within reason) and have fun. For kicks, why not start a survey of how many i-boaters have repowered with more HP than the hull is rated for. It would be interesting to see the results.

Thats a tough one Realgun. In your instance Bayliner clearly put a rating on the nameplate that matched the motor they knew they were mounting on it. They had no desire, or reason to rate it any higher at that point in time.<br /><br />RodC does have a point. Even though you know very well that you have strengthened your hull, anyone reviewing it would probably consider a rebuilt hull to be less structurally valid. In fact, I'd bet they may even de-rate it to a smaller value.<br /><br />When you rebuilt it, didn't you mention that the original nameplate was unreadable or missing, and that your only choice was to use a homebuilder's formula for max power rating? Thought so. Makes sense to me.

That is the first thing the insurance company is going to look at, if it is involved in an on water accident. Over powered=no payoff.

When I was running the 80hp, as in this pic.,+ when I switched to the Buck35hp,.........<br />They had Both been Rebadged with hp decal bands off an old 65hp...............<br /><br /><br />

I agree 100%.<br /><br />

Only if they can prove that was the cause of the accident. Your insurance company asks what boat/motor you have when you get insurance. They already know if it's overpowered before there is any accident. Most people with overpowered boats are insured just fine. I am. My insurance company knows I have a 150hp outboard. They know my CV-16 is rated for 120hp.<br /><br />If you're really worried about it, just get the cowls from a lower HP motor. They sure as hell aren't going to dyno your motor if you ever have a problem. ;)

Re: If I rebuilt the boat can I get recertified?

I will just put the 115 in it and put a sticker on it that say just guess how much. Or I will just put the 90 hood on it and forget that it really is a 115:D I rebuilt it with a thicker wood than was there and a brace the hull can hande the extra weight. I added extra foam also and can prove that if needed. I was prepared here for the ability to add more power.<br /><br />Now I have heard that the force I have really puts out about 75 HP not 85 like it says on the hood due to the altitude and how it was originally rated. I was also told that a new 90 would probaly freak me out to the speed I get. Hmm I don't konw but I believe the 115 would be fine in my case as I have done everything to make it work. I could easily pass that USCG test to do too turn the wheel 180 degrees at WOT and see if it throws you out!

The only thing I'd be concerned about is the insurance. What I'd do is "lose" the capacity tag. You just don't know where it is, etc. Then contact your insurance company and ask them if it is acceptable to have a professional surveyor determine the HP capacity by inspecting it. If that's accepatable, maybe that surveyor would use the CG formula and it would come out in your favor in terms of HP and in terms of no hassles with insurance company. Just a thought.

If you build your own boat from the keel up who determines what should be the maximun HP. That plate is just like a lot of other idiot tags on just about every piece of mechanical equipment you buy. "Don't insert fingers under lawnmower while mowing" Duh!

Realgun, just to throw a curve...at 4000-6500ft, you are loosing 15-18% off the top, plus an extra 3-5% due to being too rich with sea-level jets, if thats the case...

To get it recertified you can do the same thing the boat mfg did...apply with the USCG and spend big bucks. It won't be worth it to you.<br /><br />I think a lawyer will tell you running a bigger motor shows blatant disregard for safety standards...which opens the legal door for claims of negligence. <br /><br />These guys would love to see a larger motor on your boat for a case against you... <br /><br /> http://www.pritchettcartoons.com/lawyers2.htm

Re: If I rebuilt the boat can I get recertified?

Concievably the 115 will give me 87.5 if I lost 22% power. :) <br /><br />Seems Ok to me but I think my well the hood said 90 so thats what I put on will hold up.
