Re: If it ain't broke

As long as you SeaFoam or the likes in the gas, there should not be a problem as the chemicals plus all the cleaners in the new gas keep things pretty clean. I had my 1989 Merc 200 hp and it finally gave out last fall and I never ever did anything to the carbs. Everyboady said carbon build up caused it to throw a ring and scavange the cylinder wall, but when I tore the heads down etc, no carbon cause I decarbed regularly.

The biggest problems with outboards it the LACK of frequent use combined with a lack of proper maintenance.

Maintenance being fuel filters, water pump R&R, gear oil.

Skinny, As long as the motor idles smoothly, accelerates smoothly and runs smoothly at cruise, and the spark plugs are all the same color (light to dark brown), the motor should be fine. Carbs stay pretty clean when you use the motor often, and keep fresh fuel in it.
