If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
I've seen many an OB that ran happily for decades without this type of 'maintenance'.
Not everyone is capable of fixing or maintaining there stuff though. These same people might also not be able to recognize early warning signs of some issue waiting to happen.
Checking compression is a relatively quick & easy thing to do especially if you're changing the plugs. Even if not, you get the added bonus of inspecting, cleaning and regapping them as well as the piece of mind knowing your compression numbers.
I wouldn't rip into my carbs just because. Having said that, I've rebuild all of them at least once on all but two of my (newer) motors (newer being 11 y.o. and less). This was due to being able to recognize early symptoms of failure.
Some things that I worry about more frequently include the impeller, lower unit oil, cable operation, electrical connections, fuel filter(s), and general appearance (anything amiss inside the cowl).
