well my fishing boats craps out on me & now I have some problems with my play boat - heres my symptoms, any help is greatly appreciated.

1991 merc 3.0 - low hours.

Towards the end of the season last year I started hearing a scraping or clacking noise when I start the boat or at low RPMS, If I rev the motor & bring it back down to idle quickly the noise will go away for some time but may come back @ random. I did a search here & was convinced it was my "flapper" valve. I have replaced my flapper (which was worn) & still have this noise. The noise seems to come from the starter/bellhousing area or somewhere on the aft-starboard side of the motor. It will normally only last for 5 or ten secs so it really hard to get a stethescope on the problem area. Along with this noise I have a tiny tiny bit of blueish smoke comming out of the exhaust, slight smell of gas in oil - although my oil level does not increase, & if the motor has been worked hard (tubbing & skiing) for a while it will ociasionally diesel. The motor still runs strong & starts easily.

The dieseling doesn't concern me, I realize that this is a common problem on these 3.0's & a few minutes of idle be for shutting it off will solve that problem. The tiny bit of smoke doesn't really bother me either. My concern is this noise that I'm hearing. I plan to get it to a mechanic in the next week or two, but would like to take it out for atleast one more outing before I do so. Anyone have any ideas what the sound could be & is if a DIY project. FYI I have rebuilt 2 automotive engines.

Thanks again,
TC

it supports the drive shaft from the out drive and helps keep the motor and drive lined up

if you read through all the merc stuff on the site link it will explane everthing much better and has pictures of all the parts

tommays

Its like a carrier bearing in a large truck. It supports the drive shaft between the engine and the drive and its mounted in the gimbal housing.

I will inspect the gimbal bearing, but I think I used the wrong term. Instead of bellhouseing I should of said flywheel cover / starter area. I also failed to mention that the motor runs @ 4600 rpm @ WOT & never getshotter than 180, it normally operates right around 145/150 degrees.

The sound is pretty loud & doesn't sound like a typical bearing growl. more like some parts being shaken around in a coffee can & scraping the inside. It definetly is comming from the starter/flywheel area. I will replace the gimbal bearing since it's time anyhow, but with this type of sound does any one know what else I should check while I'm in there?

Is there any chance that there could be something in the flywheel/starter housing, small nut, flywheel tooth, bolt, etc? Maybe the flywheel is throwing it around. Ya might pull off the starter and look but it could be out of sight. Just a thought

You know, thats almost exactly what it sounds like. I guess I'll pull the inspection cover & take a look around.. Thanks. Oh, the smell of gas in the oil - should it be of concern even though there is no level change?

Probably the gas overflowing in the carb put the gas in the oil. Thins it out and it should be changed

I thought you said the carb was working ok now. I think I got yours mixed up with a different one. You can get gas in your oil a lot of ways. I would change the oil and just check it. You could have flooded out the carb a few times and get gassy smelling oil. The more I think about it I will bet a bolt or something is being thrown around by the flywheel when you hit waves or bouncing around
