There is some speculation in the media that the upturn in violence (greater than 100 American soldiers dead in October alone) is designed to affect the US elections.
So how does Alqaida want the election to turn out?
Seems to me, if I were AlQaida, I'd want the US to keep doing what they are doing. We have managed to alienate most of the Muslim world, we have Pakistan entering into an agreement to not send troops in to where it is percieved that Osama is hiding, and a recent poll in Iraq says that more than 60% of Iraqis think it ok to kill American troops.
The Iraqi government, such as it is, is corrupt and ineffectual, as is the Afghan government.
All things considered, how could it be going better for Osama, AlQaida, and their influence on the mid-East?
If I were them, I'd want the US to "Stay the Course"
