If you had a choice between all 21' +/- SC models, and you wanted a general family tube/fish/chill on the water which would you choose?

P.s. MBS has nothing to do with this. Nope, nothing at all. Neither does Craigslist.....:bounce::bounce:

Glenster --- I gotta agree with what TCM says here... SS with an outboard all the way! :)

... a general family tube/fish/chill on the water...

Might be the only vote for a Mariner.

Very bias here, but the '73 Mariner 21 does all of the above for us. The only thing that could make it better would a bigger OB, like a 140.

Granted not a hard core fisherman, so it works for my needs.

Chief - I have never seen anything on a I/O Mariner. Maybe you should convert one and be the first.

The SS O/B would be the second choice.

Re: If you could choose... Which 21' model?

I admit that the choice of owning a Holiday I/O was more opportunity than model choice for me, but I haven't been disappointed. With a young family, the open bow of other models would be my choice if I only boated in small protected waters. Having seen 6" of green water flowing up and over the windshield of an earlier 17' closed bow boat convinced me that I would never want an open bow for the waters that I boat in. And if you were to add the Chiefs and Islanders to the choice, I think that for family boating, boats with a high helm allowing only 2 people in the family to see forward are not as much fun for all. - Grandad

I blame you for my 6'itis 64! ;) ever since I saw your Mariner I have really wanted a 21' open boat! Even the Mrs Chief really like the openness of yours! Mariners seem rather few and far between though so I've been looking at other models as well like the SS you posted in the CL thread. Also saw a I/O Holiday for $1000 obo... choices choices! :)

Go big! When we went from the 16' closed bow to the 21' open, we just about doubled the usable space.

I was just about to post the Holiday you mentioned. Sounds rough and "new treated floor" has to go.

I wish I could find that Mariner I saw a couple weeks ago, I thought about you when I saw it. No pics with the ad.

If I was limited to open styles it would most certainly be a Fishmaster series. Have looked at them at sport shows and they are very roomy and good depth. But as I spend my time out on Lk Huron, Lk Michigan, and Saginaw Bay open boats are not my favorites. Now that I have a big Cheif it will make time out on those waters a lot better especially when raw weather kicks up. I have been running a 19' Thompson closed bow the past few years and more than once have had the Mrs scowl after soaking her down when the nose dipped in the waves and rolled a wall of water over the bow and windshield giving her a good bath of cold water. With a cabin there is ample height to stay off the water coming over the top and there is room for the grandkids to get into the cabin and play or take a nap. It is a minimum 60 mile tow one way for me to get on the water so needless to say we make a full day out of it, 10-14 hour days not uncommon.

Why are you not a fan of open bows for Lake Huron? I would primarily use the boat in lower Lake Huron/St Clair river/ Lake St Clair, but am thinking the added room and easy of getting around in a center console or open bow would be very useful. I live about 15 min from the lake so I can be somewhat choosy as to the weather conditions when I go out.

St Clair river and Lk St Clair they really wouldn't be a problem per say as you are usually fairly close to shorelines and can retreat rapidly in case of sudden storms. Out in Lk Huron, it leaves you quite vulnerable, especially if you fish far offshore. Many a time I have been hit with pop up storms when out 10+ miles and it is a long, wet, and rugged ride back in. With a cabin my crew can at least go inside and stay dry along with a lot of gear that I normally would have to keep bagged up or up under the bow. As you are familiar with our weather early spring and late fall can produce some real chill on the water and a place to get out of the weather even for 15 minutes can extend your time on the water. I did own a Mariner in the 80's and it certainly was a great fishing boat with a lot of room but on rough days you would still get a bath from the bow spray. I soon sold it and bought an Islander for the reasons above.

I can only assume you mainly fish for walleye???? and spend time jigging as well as some trolling. Yes an open boat would probably be more beneficial to you especially if you vertical jig by the Blue Water Bridge and would want to utilize a trolling motor. Myself, I am a very avid and die hard Salmon/Trout troller, drop the lines and troll the day away. And hey, I do get over to Pt Huron in the spring and fall and get a few of these in the St Clair river from the mouth of the black to the bridge. Maybe we will see ya out there.

Willy, I'm very new to fishing but looking to go out with a couple buddies who fish. I mostly just cruise and enjoy being on the water and occasionally do a little tubing with the family. I've been out on Saginaw bay a few times, but have stayed within a couple miles of shore since I was in my small 16' boat with a 50 HP. I want a bigger boat for the guys when we go fishing, and more room for kids and tubing stuff... and the larger engine that I could put on the bigger boat. For space, the CC design looks very nice and practical. I highly doubt if I will ever go more then a few miles off shore, and probably wont be out for more then 4-5 hours at a time. But I lack experiance on the big lake so appreciate all the advice!

I'm considering this boat, I think 64 posted it on here originally: 1986 MIRRO CRAFT center console
Its a 18'10" CC Mirrocraft with a 85 HP. I called the seller and despite a HUGE language barrier I found he has owned it for about 3 years and everything runs well. Sounds like he would sell it for $1800-$2000 without the kicker or $3000 with. What do you guys think of it? Its bigger then the 18' SC Mariner and slightly smaller then the 21' in dimensions

That doesn't look to bad. Don't think I had posted that one.

Is that an extra plate on the front where the boat rests on the winch post?

Looked up Mirrocraft and couldn't seem to find a match for 18' 10". Would be interested to confirm the model and see what the max HP would be. The 90 on our Mariner works for us so an 85 on that might not be too bad.

To make that family friendly you would have to add some cushions and maybe more seating upfront and seating in back. Also a bimini, a few cup holders, a grill, music and...........:)

Re: If you could choose... Which 21' model?

It looks like either a 1820 Pro Fisherman or 1840 Pro King Fisher, both rated for 140HP. About 10" longer and 3" wider then the 18' Mariner but about 200 lbs heavier.. same weight as a 21' Mariner. I'm thinking a 140/150 HP on it would move it along! My main question though is the condition of the transom.. in one of the pics the paint looks to be flaking off the inside. But yes, a few cushions and the family would love it! Price is not bad either if its turnkey

Re: If you could choose... Which 21' model?

Over the years I have owned most of the styles of boats you have listed, mabey not all starcrafts ( yes I made that mistake) but have good and bad points on all of them. Overall, my favorite is the one I currently own and that is the Islander 22' model, Has been great for everything and I chose the I/O model to get the better fuel economy, more maintainence yes... but much better fuel economy at a much better price than an OB. That Islander is also the favorite of my other half as well. Thats my two cents worth anyway.

A big SS would be cool but I have grown very fond of the Tin Cuddy Cabins. I just can't decide on power. I don't miss that stupid old outboard...and this 4.3 Volvo I have now sure would be nice in a big tin boat. The extra room the OB offers does make for a hard decision though.

I have been on a 21 or 22' SS with a 200 outboard. I want one.
