where's the telltale on those motors, shouldn't it be on the starboard side rear corner?

They keep revving it up to keep it running. Its only running on two cylinders. Listen to it.

My '77 35hp has a pee-hole. Maybe '76 and older?

While this is being kicked around I've got a question or two about reving with no load. I don't do it and when I hear it my hair stands on end. How do the 2S air cooled get away with it? At 4 wheeler races those boys really get throttle happy and wind 'em tight with no load. Just curious - not wanting to copy.
Thanks

On an outboard theres a point at which the motor will "run away". Itll just rev out of sight no matter where the throttle is or if the key is on or off. Itll take some pretty high r's but its certainly not good for it.

What you see in the video is quite typical and I dont know why. The motor is not running right so they rev it up thinking that will cure it. Go figure.

Well, if you think of it in a good way, at least you can hear what it sounds like out of the water before you buy it!! :D :D :D

Belchy

Scares me....Put it in the water and it may not run at all. If you just listen to it you can tell it ain't hittin' on all 4..very obvious.
It could have a hole or 2 in 2 pistons and run like that...If they gave me 100-200bucks, I might bid on it...cause it's gonna take some cash to get it usable.

Speaking of revving up the motors reminded me of a funny thing. We used to drag race on the cross Florida barge canal. After you got to the end you went a short distance and pulled into this little cove. Great for safety but you couldnt see the finish line. 9 times out of 10 you could tell who won and lost the races after you pulled in there.

The winner (and not necessairly the first boat in the cove) would turn in, shut the motor off and glide to a stop.

The loser would come in, leave the motor running in neutral, turn around to look at the motor and rev the pure snot out of it. Like that would change the outcome. And for some reason it was mostly Merc guys doing it.

Maybe they were trying to blow it up. That'd show 'em by golly!!

I'll be honest, never thought it mattered all that much to rev a 2 stroke outboard like they did in that video.
I'm not tallking about nailing/flooring it for 5 seconds or longer.
I'm on my 11th 2 stroke, never had one run away or blow, lucky I guess..

They werent really revving it up all that far. I just thought it was odd that they're trying to pawn it off on some unsuspecting soul by saying "look how great it runs" when you can clearly hear that its not hitting on all 4. They had to keep it reved to keep it running.

My friend was revving a 3 cyl 2 stroke jet ski out back once, it ran away. I never saw it happen and I don't want to see it again. THe thing just pegged out at full RPM, he frantically closed the throttle and pulled all the plug wires, and it still kept running. He tried choking it out by covering the carbs but had three carbs and two hands. It finally stopped, I think he pulled the fuel line.

Why (how) does that happen?

Yeah that thing wouldnt idle hence the rev job.
It's located 5 minutes from where I live but I think I'll pass.
The funniest thing about the ad is the guy who asked if the motor could be shipped ?
Thats funny.

Stiff: Sounds like it went to self ignition like model air plane motors. Something in the combustion chamber was acting like the glow plug in the model motors after they are started.

I've seen the runaway issue several times with motorcycles. The last time it was a Suz RL250 trials bike that the throttle cable got snagged in a fall. The kill button wouldn't kill it, some brave soul jerked the plug wire off to no avail.

I then had one of those moments of genius that gearheads love. The bike was laying on the right side with the gear lever upward. I just grabbed the shifter and started clicking it up to 5th and then told the guys on the other side to pick the bike up. They pulled in the clutch and picked the bike up and popped the clutch to kill the motor. First gear would have launched the bike into space.

Pretty hair raising to hear a motor revving to the moon with no conventional way to stop it.

I've had it happen to me on an old suzuki 2stroke roadbike in traffic. VERY scary! Excessive carbon buildup will do it, as will ignition timing far enough out to cause overheating coupled with a small amount of carbon buildup-or in my case just plain overheating in slow moving traffic on a real hot day and forgetting the 3-monthly decoke.

You otta see the flywheel depart the pattern on destruction on a run-away.
For some reason, an aluminum flywheel doesn't like high R's in neutral....they can and do fly apart at times.
