Re: if you was looking for a cabin cruiser 30+ range what would ya have to have

few weeks ago i took a charterd boat ride guessing it was a 100 foot boat. now seeing as the captain drives this boat for a living he knows how to turn it but with twins he had 1 in reverse and 1 in forward doing a tight u-turn no bow thrusters. i wouldnt think bow thrusters would be worth it for anything under 50-60 feet. thats about all the imput i can help you with. i dont know any differnces between v-drive and outdrives, hopefully you will post back on what he gets or what hes looking at.

is your buddy looking new or used? if i had to choose a brand would probably be tiarra, carver, or a bertram. tiarra, because they are made 50 miles from my house. bertram because some of them are made in michigan, and carver because i like the look of a flybridge.

Personal opinion but I did NOT want sterndrives, I wanted inboards. I also wanted an aft cabin (30 and 34 sea Ray with inboards did not have an aft cabin). I do wish I had a generator and air, I also wish I had a seperate shower... Look into a 34' late 80s to early 90s silverton 34X. It's a HUGE 34, I mean massive for it's length. I just walked by one on a pier docked in front of a 36 Trojan F36 and it actually looked larger!!

Well, I have a 34 footer. My list:
Flybridge
Lower helm station
Air conditioning
Marine generator
Anchor windlass
straight-shaft V8 inboards
Stand-up headroom (6' minimum)
Separate sleeping/dining areas
Full head with shower

What are the pros and cons of a V drive vs outdrives
V drives (and straight-shaft inboards) have their driveshaft coming directly out of the bottom of the hull thru a packing flange. You can easily differentiate a V drive boat because the engines are usually in the rear of the hull and installed "backwards" (crankshaft pulley to the rear, transmission to the front). Straight-shaft inboards have engines mounted conventionally with the crankshaft pulley to the front and transmission to the rear.
Typical advantages of inboards: more precise slow-speed manueverability, fewer seals and moving parts than an outdrive and less metal immersed in the water.
Disadvantages: lower top speed, no ability to trim or raise running gear or props, and (specifically) V drive service can be difficult because they're often located directly under the engines.

Bowtruster.. Are they as nice to have as they look?
Sure, but many (including myself) consider them a 'crutch' that enable 'less-than-good' captains to think they're better than they really are! :)

Good luck. If he finds a serious prospect, he should hire a marine surveyor before buying. Big boats are complex machines

This may sound like a minor thing to some, but I have to have the big double wide
Bench at the helm. I think Sea Ray has the best lay out if you're looking at a boat
for relaxing.
