Re: If you where the parent what would you do?
OK... here's a story......

A couple of years ago I was scheduled for a hip replacement operation when my primary care physician suddenly announced he would be taking an indefinite leave of absence and dropped of the face of the earth.

This guy was probably the best family doctor I had ever met. He was just complete natural.

Apparently the reason was a great mystery to all who knew him and worked with him.

When I was getting prepped at the hospital, nurses would realize who my doctor was and pepper me with questions about it.

The general consensus was that he had cancer or something like that, but nobody knew anything.

About 10 months after my surgery I got a phone call from my wife.

She said that she had received a strangely worded postcard from the Anytown Family Practice offices.

I asked her to read it to me and this is what it said.......

"Doctor Mary Smith, formerly known as Doctor John Jones, is proud to announce her return to the Anytown Family Practice and is accepting new patients at this time."

My wife asked me what do you think this means?

I told her that there was only one thing it could mean and why doesn't she call and find out?

She did not want to do it, so I ended up calling.

I did not quite know how to put it so I told the receptionist that I had received a strange post card in the mail.

Before I could say another word, she sighed and said Yes,,,,,,Doctor Jones has changed his gender!!!

I thanked her and called my wife back.

Our son was about 6 years old at the time and my wife was dead set that we were going to find another Doctor.

Doctor Jones/Smith was such a good Doctor and had done so much for my family that it was a hard decision for me.

But because of my son, we decided to switch. I understand the no preformed conceptions stuff, but decided that a six year old should not have to understand why his man doctor suddenly started dressing like a women, and that I should not have to explain it to a child.

The funny thing is that 5 years later, my son had a skateboard accident and ended up in the emergency room. Doctor Smith was there and treated my boy.

She was a very nice grandmotherly sort of women. I had a nice chat with her? and explained why we had switched doctors and Doctor Smith said that she understood. She said that we had done the right thing in her eyes. She mentioned that she had lost a lot of her family patients, but her practice had rebounded.

I asked her if she ever disclosed her gender change to her new patients. She replied that she will talk about it when asked, but most people knew. She said that she still gets a lot of one-time patients.

I asked my son about how he liked the doctor at the emergency room and he told me she was really cool. He also said that she seemed really familiar. I dont thing I ever told him the story. Im just a chicken I guess.

I always thought that she should have revived her practice in a different town where she was not so well known when she was a he. (what a strange sentence) That would have been the easiest way to do it. Start a new life so to speak. I always wondered why she did not do this.

But I suppose that was her way of proving that she was comfortable with herself and her new identity. Im sure it wasnt easy, and I have to give her credit for standing up for what she believed in.

On one hand, the teacher would just have to face a short period of people accepting her at her old school since they knew her before, and on the other hand would probably have a much harder time at a new school especially if she tried to keep it hidden and was found out.

However, I do not think that the kids should have to be exposed to this kind of stuff in school, and it should totally be at the PARENTS discretion if they are. And at 71 years of age, she should just retire and go on a cruise or something.

Mike
