got a 5.0 mercruiser 2000 bayliner boat ran fine last time we took it out. sat for a few days and then couldn't get it started up. Boat turns over fine but no spark. Was getting odd voltage readings coming from the coil and no voltage from the pick up. Found they have remade the pick up sensor part and sure enough I found a small chip in the bottom of the distributer. Still no spark so I thought I had a bad coil. Now I am getting frusterated cause I am parts chasing. I was thinking perhaps a solenoid in line to the coil or ignition module. kill switch checked out fine. any advice? thx for help

This should help you track down the problem.

Re: ign prob

Don thanks for everything. Here is how it turned out:

1. Always remember to put the mounting screws into the new pick up sensor. Otherwise the rotor hits it and shears off the plastic molded pin inside the rotor. DUH DUH DUH!

2. With the new pick up sensor make sure it has a real good ground. Found one on the port side rear of the motor. The new sensors have an extra round head ground terminal that needs to be tied in.

Once again, so much appreciation for your assisance and sharing your knowledge with everyone.

Whenever in kansas city I owe you one.
