Okay, I crunched through the snow, opened the cowl on my (newly purchased) 1982 25 HP Johnson outboard, and took some pictures. My original question was to see a picture of the Ignition and Starter wiring, but I think I with this picture, I answered my own question. On the starboard side of the motor there are two (2) cut wires coming forward, and on the port side, there are two cut wires coming forward. I'm only guessing that the wires on the starboard side are the "Ignition Switch" wires (?), and the port side the "Battery" wires? Please don't get on me about how dirty the motor is, I got it this winter, painted/decaled the exterior, but haven't got to cleaning/tuning the motor yet. Thanks for all your help, but can someone confirm that those wires are the ones to connect to a new ignition switch and battery.

Re: Ignition Battery Wiring

You have the battery cables labeled correctly but the other two I'm not sure about. It makes sense to me that they would be ignition wires.

Re: Ignition Battery Wiring

So, I got the battery hooked up. Now there are 2 wires from the solenoid, and 2 wires coming from the starboard side (positive and negative) that need to be hooked up to my keyed ignition switch. Now I'm not sure if I need a 3 or 4 pole switch to hook the wires to, but will have to wait until I can hook up water to the motor, to check that out. Still ice on the lake, so it will be a while yet.

You need a six pole marine OB ignition switch (do not use an automotive switch). Wiring looks something like this:

Those wires to the solenoid dont look heavy enough to connect to the batt. Does that motor have a solenoid to activate the chock? It looks as though the starter is after market installed? the starter bracket it different color than the engine.

Re: Ignition Battery Wiring

I already bought a marine 3 prong switch, because it looked like it was the most popular type keyed ignition switch. This switch will mount on the motor itself (tiller type), with no choke or gauges, just on off. Are you sure I'll still need a 6 prong/pole switch?

Re: Ignition Battery Wiring

I bought a marine 5 pole/prong key switch, and wired both the battery and kill wires to it. I then hooked up my battery, tried it, and WHALA it works! Now, once the ice melts up here in Michigan, I'll get that ole 1982 25 HP screeming down the lake. Thanks for all your help!! :)

Yeah, I think we still have about 12" of ice on our lake. Last year it was open on March 18th. Don't think so this year.
