hello everyone, i have a 1975 evinrude 70hp. this motor doesnt seem to be kicking out enough power. all 3 cylinders have 110 lbs of compression.
i tested the ignition coils by unplugging the wires from each spark plug while the engine was running. the first two i pulled off, the engine idled down but the third one i could not pull off because i received a pretty good shock. is that an indication my ignion coil could be faulty ? please repy, thankyou ! ~ larry

Re: Ignition coil problems ?

Hope you did your test with rubber gloves and pliers with insulated grips...otherwise you're taking a chance on a trip to the hospital, voltage is not a good thing around water. If you can run it at night, you'll see right away if that plug wire is leaking current...sounds like it is. The fact that you took a jolt tells you the coil and its sister components are doing they're job, creating voltage...but it may not be reaching the plug/cylinder. Check the wires and plugs. If you can pull a plug wire when it's running and nothing changes in the way it runs, you have found a dead cylinder/suspect.

i did pull the plugs off with a rubber handled pliers but still got jolted. i stopped the engine then pulled that plug wire off, re-started the engine and it did sound like it was missing ! i havent tried running it at night yet. but for a $25.00 coil i may as well just replace it ! ~ thankyou

don't buy part you don't need. stopping the motor does no good, you have to pull the wire, without touching the metal on the pliers.

Have you replaced the plug? Did you pull it and take a look? You can also try swapping the plug with another cyln to see if that effects it (problem moves to another cyln).
