Finally putting together the GM 5.0 1983 engine with Thunderbold IV ignition. I have a new coil from my previous engine/boat, 1980 5.7 GM with Mallory distributor and points. I checked on the iboats list of parts numbers and the coils used may be the same, but I was under the impression that marine electronic ignition coils are diffrent from points ignition coils. Am I wrong in that the two coils are the same and I can use the one from my previous engine? It's not a big expense to replace, but if I don't need to, I'd rather use the money for something else.

Re: Ignition coil question

They are NOT the same coil.
The Mallory takes a Mercruise coil # 392-806529A1 while the Thunderbolt uses a 392-805570A2

We didn't disagree, Bondo says if your numbers cross they should work. But your numbers SHOULDN'T cross. They are different coils.
