Re: ignition coil question

Fortuantely, the engine never gets hot enough to ignite oil. If it did, you would hear about engines blowing up all the time from their engine oil exploding! :)

The oil/epoxy thing is more a longevity issue and not a safety issue. If a coil fails due to vibration it won't cause a safety issue other than your boat dieing at an inopertune moment. I really challenge that as an issue anyway. Probably more vibration to the coil while the boat is on a trailer than when it is in the water. As far as longevity due to heat dissipation, one would think an oil filled coil will be able to dissipate heat better than an epoxy based one. That is why all commercial power transformers are oil filled...to dissipate heat out to cooling fins.

Re: ignition coil question

Them Volvo boys are in big trouble. Had a customer order an OEM coil for an AQ260 about 2 weeks ago. Seems the package was damaged during shipment, the coil was caved in, (other things in the package damaged also) but the coil had oil leaking out of a hole in it's side. Still in the Volvo box.

Didn't Volvo get the epoxy coil memo? Why are they using oil filled coils?

I guess the ORIGINAL coil on my 90 OMC 4.3 finally went bad after 19 years because it was oil filled.

Re: ignition coil question

I have an 06 4.3 carbed merc with 125 hrs that just all of the sudden started cutting out and was hard to start and would backfire then got it home and could barley get it to run then it would die. went through the complete trouble shooting guide and it was the coil, my factory coil was oil filled so i went to autozone and picked up a chevy coil for $20 and it fired right up and ran perfect. plan on ordering a better coil and keeping this one for a spare

What "better" coil could beat "started and ran perfect"?

The original one from Volvo on my 1991 is oil filled and the engine starts and runs perfect. Not sure what to do now...:D

Re: ignition coil question

Luckily, my OEM coil is Epoxy, so my replacement will be too! My own opinion (Not worth too much) says the paint also comes into question, I would venture to say the paint is epoxy or some type that doesn't allow corrosion as easy as say plane ole paint on an auto z*ne coil. My boat, being fresh water only, isn't an issue compared to you guys who are around salt water all the time.

Re: ignition coil question

If anyone wants a little more of a perfomance coil go to jegs.com they have a bunch of high perfomance coils for about the same price as a stock coil with way more volts. ( oil and epoxy filled) LOL
