I found the problem to be oily residue causing the coil to ground out.I cleaned the coil(at #4cyl.) and checked the rest of the motor as soon as I found the problem. It was only a small amount of oil at the problem site(couple of drops). The motor will only run about half-speed at full throttle.Could the coil grounding out cause any other related problems?

Hi enimi...welcome to the forum...

Was there actual sparking from the coil to ground? Not saying that it's not possible but a couple drops of oil should not ground out a coil. Usually, the coil gets cracked and you can see the spark jump to the motor block.

What ya' need to do is run a spark test to determine if all cylinders are firing. A good spark will jump a good 7/16 gap. Also, if ya' have not done so, a compression test would be a good idea to determine the condition of the cylinders.

A little info if ya' would'nt mind....have you had the motor for a while or have just aquired it? Has the engine set for a while? What other systems have you experienced?

More important, if your going to keep the engine for a while, 88's are a great engine, it would good for you to get a service manual. OEM preferred. They are still available from your local Johnny/Rude dealer. Keep us posed.

Hi Jim!Thanks for your reply! In answer to your question,Yes, The spark was jumping like crazy ;especially at higher RPM,s.There was enough oil that the immediate area was wet.I installed new spark plugs(gap.030).The old plugs on the left bank were black, the plugs on the right bank were clean with presence of fuel. The motor seems to be running smooth under load.Still running about half speed at full throttle.Checked linkage on carburators, both are operating same.Butterflies are opening wide open at full throttle, closing all the way at idle.By the way, this motor was purchased about 2 weeks ago.Would run faster when first ran, but, still wasn't up to par.I am going to purchase a repair manual and a tachometer today. Also will check spark onall cylinders as you suggested. Thanks!
