Ignition coils

My Force 125Hp 89 model starts ok when cool, then begins missing soon after. I suspect a bad coil. Will parts house or boat shop have a test machine for coils? I was thinking of a device that could spark each one until it warmed up or stress it like normal load.

Re: Ignition coils

I bought 2 spark testers from Harborfreight and attached one to each wire. They seem to work well and they're inexpensive. Might be the way to see what kind of spark you're getting.

Re: Ignition coils

Smitty, an easier way to test the coils is to use a hair dryer. Put the engine on motor flushetts and start it up. Play the hair dryer on the suspected parts and see if the problem duplicates. I would suspect a power pack instead of a coil. Coils usually tend to leak if they over heat.

Hope we've helped and keep us posted.

OutboardJim, you're probably right. I was thinking (incorrectly) magneto coils. Guess I'm stuck in the past.
