I got confused while setting base timing on my 1994 four winns, and accidentally connected the G terminal of the four prong ignition module connector to a 12 volt source. I have been reading about the special plug needed to retard the timing, and though for sure that I read this somewhere. Well, fried the ignition module, and had this confirmed at the local auto parts store, as they have a tester there.

My question: can this module be sourced from a car engine? I know one should not use the cap from the automotive counterparts, as these are not very corrosion resistant, but have found that a 1986 Buick Skylark has the same HEI cap and rotor as the 3.0l omc/ mercruiser. Is the module the same too?

Maybe. Take it out and give it a try. The module is not "marine", the distributor is.

I did not trust it, and returned the car part, and had the correct one overnighted. I was told by a car tech that the vehicle module is computer controlled, and would not have given the correct advance curve.

Also, when replacing the module, make sure to clean the distributor area well, then apply heat sink to the underside of the module before attaching it. ( that's what my instructions said....)
